I have sewn patches on my leather jacket. you'll need a good machine, and a leather needle. I don't iron them first, I've seen this done before, but when I was asked to fix them (make 'em straight) it was a bit difficult to move them. So do it straight the first time, and if leaking is an issue, use a seam sealer, rain gear. hope this helps
Use a good machine with a needle made specifically for sewing.
My wife has a high-tech sewing machine but it was worthless without the proper type of needle.
Also.....use vests for your patches/pins etc. I have put only one patch on a leather jacket......saw this one at BikeWeek with the big HD eagle over bar & sheild...anyhow....they sewed it on my jacket for $10......and it was a professional job that looked right.......that is the only thing I would ever do to expensive leather......
