My gf is trying to attach a patch she got at the HD store to her leather jacket. The patch has a plastic like substance on the back of it, so she is trying to iron it on. Is this how this is supposed to work, or do you sew patches onto leather?

Thanks.

This is coming from my limited experience but as far as I know the plastic on the back of the patch is to keep all the thread work from coming undone. I would bet that it would be a sew-on patch. Even if it were an iron-on type, sewing it on wouldn't hurt it at all. And as the other post said....you want to sew patches onto leather anyway.

I tried ironing the patch...didn't work. Paid 4 bucks and had it sewed on.

the plastic like substance on the back is to hold the stitching from coming lose on the design of the patch, have someone sew it on.

DON'T put patches on your jacket! Buy a vest a size larger and put the patches on it. Wear the vest with the patches over your jacket.

If you change your mind later, you've only wasted a 50 dollar vest instead of a 200 dollar or more jacket!

I have several friends that belong to mc clubs. This is what they do so that if they go to an establishment that prohibits wearing colors, they just take the vests off or turn them inside out.

And bear in mind that sewing through the leather creates leaks... Not sure if they've figured out a way to sew through the leather without going all the way to the other side, but don't see how....

Maybe there's some sort of sealant to place around the stitching when done?
