Last night, my wife and I were sitting in the living room and I said to her, "I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens, just pull the plug."
She got up, unplugged the TV and then threw out my beer.

As funny as that anecdote was, the Living Will is no joke. Part of the deal with my wife for me to get back into riding was to do a death will and a living will. I spent the better part of two days just going through my stuff and figuring out what I had, where it was and how to get at it (ie: banks, stocks, passwords, etc). This would be an unbelievable task for anyone else who had no idea of where to start.
Both documents have to be signed in front of witnesses and notarized before the state will recognize them as legal. Some states even require them to be filed with the clerk of courts. So, if you take the big hit and go vegetative or helpless (as in can't breathe on your own while you're paralyzed from the neck down), youmight just have to live with it. I personally couldn't bear the suffering and expense it would put my loved ones through. My choice would be to check out and now that choice is signed & sealed.
That story did hit home, because the other part of the deal was that I quit drinking. 2 wheels = 0 beers. Don't miss it a bit and am having the time of my life riding the tires off my bike. See you in Reno - leaving tomorrow AM.
