Make sure you cover that rear fender with a towel when trying to "slip" the seat out from under the strap. I havea friend who's brother's cousin scratched his back fender doing that. I, I mean, he learned his lesson after that. A black permanent marker will somewhat cover it up.

Easier to just take the damn thing off to start with. Every HD I have owned the strap comes off the first time I take the seat off.
Donny; You and only you have to decide if your bike is 'jewelry' or 'fun transportation'. If it is 'jewelry', then buy the new fender from H-D. If it is 'fun transportation', get the touch-up paint from a dealer and touch it up. 99.9% of the time no one else will ever notice it. It just becomes one of those battle scars that you can make up a great story about. I have a Yellow Pearl Sportster and a Sierra Red Road King Classic. Both of them are ridden hard and often on gravel roads. They also receive their share of scrapes from having to live in a very crowded garage. I have both sets of touch-up paint. I don't regard either of them as anything but 'fun transportation'. I ran the front fender of the Sportster into something in the garage. I repaired the chip with my touch-up paint. IF anyone ever asks me about it, I will tell them that it occurred when a gravel truck dropped a big rock right in front of me and only through my superior driving skills was I able to avoid total disaster and only got that chip. .............. Ah yes I remember it well. The bike went into the water I went into the water the shark was in the water. There I was riding feverishly when he appeared out of nowhere he went to bite as I swerved out of the way he only caught my fender and put a scratch in it. As I was pulling away the bubbles that was created from my exhaust block his vision from see me hense making my get away easier and thats the truth.
