I am relocating to AZ from east coast and am looking for info. I will be working in Tempe. Can anyone recommend some good areas to live not too far from Tempe. I was out there in August and really liked it. How is the riding? Local hangouts? Thanks all info would be greatly appreciated.
I think this is "Off Topic" material. I was born and raised in phoenix, have lived in Phoenix, scottsdale, and mesa. If you can afford to live in scottsdale, it has one of the lower crime rates. Each city has it's good areas and bad. As for close to Tempe, Directly south of ASU several miles isn't bad. Get down to Southern between McClintock and Priest. Most of that isn't bad. I can give you more but not sure what area of tempe you'll be in, financial ability, etc. You're going at good time. Perfect riding weather!!! Let me know and I'll give you some good rides to take.
I live in Tempe, just a few miles away from the ASU campus (close enough where we can hear the cannons shoot off when the Sun Devils score a touchdown!) We're on the southeast side of Tempe, just close to the Mesa border actually. One of the best and most central locations to live in Phoenix actually, so if you can afford it, it's the place to be! (we bought our house well before the housing boom - and bust) Every time we talked about joining the bandwagon and buying a bigger house out east, we just couldn't.
Ahwatukee is another nice place to live that's not too far away. A little more expensive, but a better school district so I've heard (if you have kids).
I spent 25 year in the greater Phoenix area, mostly in Scottsdale. I would recommend the areas north and east over south and west although I have lived all over the valley.
Yes, riding is great, just point a finger and take off. As soon asourhouse sells we will be moving to Prescott, AZ. It's cooler there and less people. Fantastic riding in the AZ mountains. :-) maverick
Well, I guess it all depends on how much you want to spend for rent/mortgage...Do you want to be in the city or just outside of Tempe..? You can go in all four directions and find lots to choose from..We live in Apache Junction and love it..As far as places to ride, check out this web site...

Apachee junction is not bad and a short ride to Tempe
I used to live @ Rual and Southern behind where the Mervyns store is
as for places to ride well the possibilitys are endless as there is a different journey awaits you every time you leave ........
Not during rush hour! I work from home, but that commute from AJ to Tempewould have me ready to kill someone after about 6 months. It's not quite as bad as your typical southern california rush hour, but it's pretty close now (I've lived in both places).
The close to Tempe you live, the better off you'll be. I'm biased, since commuting (or lack thereof) is much more valuable to me that saving some money on a house. Plus, if you end up switching jobs and stay in Phoenix, you'd still be centrally located and have an easier commute than the majority of the people in this area.
I live in Mesa in an apartment and my brother commutes to Tempe. It takes a while, but if you ride you can use the HOV lane. It's a PITA with the traffic out here. But if you go North, you have to take the 101 which isn't particularly fun either. I'd say 60 is the lesser of two evils though. Maybe I'm wrong.
I've only ever traveled the 101 in a North direction during rush hour.
