Here is my unbiased opinion. To me there are 3 really spots to live (excluding the area's where you need to be a millionaire) in the Phoenix metro.

1. Scottsdale- lots of nice communities, great bars and clubs, and nice restaurants and good schools. If your into the club scene this in the best place to be. I love the clubs up on 24th and Camelback. The women are hot as hell and the crowd is pretty cool....the cons of Scottsdale are the houses are spendy, the 101 freeway is arguably the most congested road to be on in the valley. Also, Scottsdale is nice as it is only about an hour and 15 minutes from cool temp's and great riding in Sedona and 2 hours from Flagstaff which is paradise in the summer. Also only 15 minutes from Carefree/Cave Creekwhich is a big biker hangout...

2. Gilbert-Great community, houses a little less expensive than Scottsdale, and up and coming area. Everything in Gilbert looks brand new. Still has a small town feel and the people are friendly. Lots of new restaurants and malls opening up as we speak. Great proximity to riding out to the east valley with Show Low about a 2 hour trek and a fantastic ride. Also near Canyon Lake which is another must ride. Only 20 minutes from downtown, 25 minutes to north Scottsdale, and about 2.5 hours to Flagstaff. Also Gilbert is well known for having great schools and neighborhoods and very little crime compared to the rest of the Phoenix area.

3. South Chandler OR Ahwatukee. Note the "south" part. North Chandler is ghetto. South Chandler, especially anything around Ocotillo is very nice. Great neighborhoods, and lots of great companies to work for nearby. Ahwatukee is very nice as well. Near the I-10 for your commute if needed. Lots of shopping area's and some nice local bars as well. Houses are nice, lots of gated communities as well. Crime a bit higher than Gilbert is only downfall...closer to downtown Phoenix however.
Sounds pretty biased to me! I've lived in both Scottsdale and Tempe now, and I'd pick Tempe hands down. Nicer people (Scottsdale people as a whole are some of the fakest in this state!), cheaper houses, and you can still drive 15 minutes to see all the eye candy you want (quite a few of them are down here to, although they are ASU students and younger.) There's no more crime here in Tempe than any other city btw, most of it in the northern part closer to ASU for that matter. For example, Scottsdale has had 97 crimes last month. Tempehad 135. Chandler had176, Gilbert189, Mesahad well over 200. All cities are in the 100k - 500k population range, with Mesa almost double the rest of the cities. (Yes, I'm slightly biased! )

Finally, I would personally avoid living more than say 20 miles from work. Especially if you work during the rush (9 to 5) I live 6 miles from my job and the wife is 4 miles. We spend 15 minutes a day each commuting. That is priceless in this area. So if you know where you will be working I'd highly advise you to find something as close as possible to your new home. Like one of the posts said-the longer the commute, the more stress you have in life. Couldn't agree more with that. Keep your commute short, and you'll be happier. It's a great place to live. 4 hours from beaches in Mexico or San Diego and 5 from LA for that weekend trip to Disneyland....my final piece of advice is make sure you buy a house that has a pool. Without a pool, I don't think I'd be able to stand summer's here....good luck!

Welcome to AZ. And just in time for the great fall and winter riding season.

You'll love the riding:

Depends on your age / family? I just moved from Gilbert to N. Scottsdale...love it up here. I'm singleand Gilbert is a great family community(boring). If you are around 30 or under /single Tempe probably will work. Like everyone said you don't want to ride your bike and commute. Especially around now when the snow birds are on the street.[sm=yikesomg.gif][sm=yikesomg.gif][sm=yikesomg.gif]
