Living where I do we don't have much rain. I haven't carried my rain gear in probably the last 4 or 5 years and yes, I'vebeen rained on but in our arid climate I dry out pretty fast.
So, my question is - chaps would have kept my lower legs nice and dry/warm but do you still get wet in the upper/inner thigh area and crotch region where the leather doesn't cover? By the way, I have a quick disconnect windshield and it was disconnected and sitting in the garage!! That probably would have helped.
So, fill me in on the ups and downs of a good pair of leather chaps. Thanks.
You will definitely get wet in the crotch. Get a pair of decent rain pants
I can't believe everyone so far has forgotten about how to make your leather(including chaps) totally waterproof. Are there no bikers left aroound here?
1. chaps must have fringe. The longer the better.
2. wear a leather vest with as many pins and patches as possible.
3. any saddlebags must have fringe and be covered with conches.
4. your jacket must have a huge HOG patch on the back.
5. tassels on the handlebars. this will help wipe off any rain that gets on you.
6. your do rag MUST have either skulls or female sillouettes all over it.
7. having fringe on your foot boards helps.
I'm not sure if that last one is true but it's what I've been told.
So it seems I'm the only REAL biker here. If anyone has any questions or needs advice I'll be over in the waving forum.

The only time I put a rain suit on is when it is raining hard, and the ride has to happen.Otherwize chaps when needed. With a windshield on it does help a lot keeping the rain off.

I blew a snot bubble (hate when that happens ... sorta) laughing at this one. Most any Saturday at the local HD shops you'll see about ten guys who fit this to a T.
We got "sold" a little bottle of Doc Bailey's leather condtioner at Sturgis. Turned out to be the best $20 we ever spent on gear. It absolutely made our leathers waterproof, even in heavy rain. We used it on everything--coats, boots, chaps and pants. It beads water on our leathers like wax on a windshield, and does a really nice job on fixing the scuffs marks.
