Hey Brian....We did Deals Gap last spring and had a great time. We were a little disappointed with the Dragons Tail after all we had heard about it, but then we road the Shenadoah Skyway and the Blue Ridge Parkway to get there. We stayed at Maggie Valley for two days and were able to do the Tail a coupla times along with the Cherohala Skyway and the Smokey Mnts. National Park. We hit the Tail in the middle of the week to avoid the crowds and because of the time of year(first week in June), it was pretty quiet.

To me the dragon is much more fun on a sportbike, standard, or motard. You'll enjoy the trip, but I think you'll like the surrounding area much better. In NC on a Harley, I don't think you can beat the parkway as long as it's not too crowded. If I were you I'd goto Gatlinburg then ride to Cherokee & take the parkway all the way to VA. This would take you through Asheville if you wanted to stay a night there. You'll meet alot of nice people.

It's definately worth seeing the NC & TN mountains, but I think they are not as spectacular as Yellowstone, Glacier, or even the Adirondacks (sp?).

I've rode many of the western mountains and NONE compare to the Smokys. If you know where to go the rides are great.

Guess it's all in what you like. There's not too many roads in the NC mountains that I haven't ridden on primarily b/c I grew up there. I just find the huge rocky cliffs, waterfalls, abundant wildlife, and snow covered mountains found elsewhere more visually appealing than the Smokeys. Don't get me wrong, I like the mts out here - just not as much as elsewhere.

My buddy and I are planning to ride from Oklahoma up through Michigan into Canada, East back into Maine, then to Nova Scotia, Prince Edwards Island and Newfoundland, then down the East coast to Key West, then home. Hope it all comes about.

Hey Brian, I live in Pigeon Forge and me and a bunch of friends do the Dragon several times a year. If I can be of any assistance don't hesitate to call me. It's a great ride, but there are also a bunch more rides in the area that are just as fun. If you need any help PM me and I'll give you my phone number. Also if you want some company when you go, let me know, I'll bring some of my crazy friends with me.

you also have a really nice motorcycle museum in Maggie Valley
The museum is a pretty amazing place, you almost need to budget half a day to try to see it all. Do a web search for the Wheels through Time museum.

also the 80 miles of the Blue Ridge Pwky. from Cherokee to Asheville is very beautiful and I would do that too if you have time
I feel this is the most challenging section of the BRP, it's not Deal's Gap but it's a bunch of fun. Lot's of great places to stop for the scenery but I highly recommend a place called the Devil's Courthouse. It's one of those places where you can see five states on a clear day, breathtaking view. I don't remember the milepost but it's close to Waynesville, NC which is also home of Ghost Town H-D.

Brian you are in for a real treat. That area of East Tennessee and Western North Carolina is just made for riding. I grew up in Knoxville and live in Atlanta. I have a mountain house in the Nantahala National Forest near lake Appalachia (Cherokee County NC) and I ride all over that area. I raced a black bear on my road king! I like to hike up Pack Mountain and dig some fresh ginseng and then ride.

Everywhere you go around that area of Deals Gap, Cherohala skyway, Gatlinburg is great. Just south of Robinsville is the Nantahala river. There is a whitewater center with a restaurant there that has great food. Go west through Murphy and you are at the Ocoee river where the 1996 Olympic whitewater events were held. That ride along the Ocoee is nice also. You can take a raft down both rivers.

North Georgia has great riding also, Brastown Bald, Tallulah falls, Springer Mountain where the AT starts, Hellen and Dahlonega. Hellen is like Gatlinburg but smaller.

If you ride through Piggeon Forge or Gatlinburg in mid summer get an oil cooler, the traffic is bad.

I cant wait for warm weather.
