Figured I might as well start planning some of the trips the wife and I will be doing next year. One of them will be to Deal's Gap and related areas. Would those of you who have made this trip please give any insight / suggestions as to what would be the best stuff to do and place to stay? I want to make the best of the time we spend there. Due to my job I have an extremely hard time getting away for more than a few days at a time.
Hey Brian, that's a great trip area to go, I would stay in Cherokee or Robbinsville, that's a good area to ride out from each day, for sure make the Cherohala Skyway, it's not far from Deals Gap, you could make Deals and then make a loop to catch the skyway, you also have a really nice motorcycle museum in Maggie Valley, also the 80 miles of the Blue Ridge Pwky. from Cherokee to Asheville is very beautiful and I would do that too if you have time. The ride from Robbinsville to Deals on Hwy 28 is awesome along the river and you will get to see a couple of really cool dams along the way. Lot's of curves, lot's of curves. Let me know when you get the trip plans worked out and maybe a couple of us local guys could come up and ride some of it with you.
Lots of places out West to ride if you have time that permits. If so let me know and I'll sent you a few iteniraries.
I have a trip planned for August 4 to the 10th of this year that will take in all the Mountain Passes in Colorado that are above 10,000.
I am calling it Haul *** for the Pass, and I'm having T-Shirts made. Anyone that would like to join is welcome. This will involve some of the most beautiful country in the world.
There are 22 10,000+ paved passes that I can find, and the trip will include a run to the top of Mt. Evans, which is the highest paved highway in the US at 14,264 ft.
This ride is going to be ride at your own pace rather than a tight group thing, with a sharing of adventures at the end of the day.
You can stay right at Deals Gap -- there's a motorcycle motel there. There's a quiet little town by the name of Townsend, TN that's close to Gatlinburg and the Foothills Parkway, and the Dragon. That's where I'd stay for my first trip.
I've been there many times. We always stay in Gatlinburg. After a long day of riding, you can stay in town and walk everywhere. Riding is great, but it's nice to get off and relax, get cleaned up and just walk around. Shop, eat, party, you name it. All on one main drag. My favorite place in the world. Probably made the ride at least 15 times !! Check out the Mid Town Lodge. Right smack in the middle of town. Just my idea of fun, I'm sure you'll get many other suggestions. Have fun at the dragon. Pay attention and ride your own pace.
