Why not just have it delivered where you want it....like your driveway? Is there some reason
a delivery can't be made? Why would you want it to go to a different dealer anyhow?

Take the deal you have to your local sales mananger and tell him what you are thinking of doing. If he can't match it ask him if service would be a problem with the bike you buy out of the area.

I've heard of people flying and buying. The dealer closest to me doesn't have a very good selection. Seems like they add every accessory possible and then you pay for it. I've seen some dealer's online who seem to have better selections. Plus, there appear to be some who have a better OTD price. I had just wondered about getting a bike from an out of area dealer. Is it possible to buy and have it shipped? Has anyone done that?
In your case oldguy, I think you'd have to stay in state. I don't know how it applies to new vehicles, but I believe if you buy something from out of state (of California at least), it has to have 7500 miles on it before you can get it registered in Cali. At least in your case, you have quite a big state, so you could pick something in San Diego for example and have it shipped to you!

I have heard of several dealers that will fly you out, and you ride the bike home. As far as shipping from one dealer to another, the only way I can see that working decently in your favor would be if the dealers are owned by the same company/person. For example, Arrowhead HD, Chandler HD, and HD of Tucson are all owned by the same group, so if you wanted to buy from Chandler, and Tucson had the bike you wanted, I could see them shipping it up in that case.

I've heard of this being done.
In fact, I thought someone on this forum may have posted something about it.
Oh well, maybe it was somewhere else I read about it.

Nonetheless, the guy posting the story complained about the receiving dealer being a jerk regarding the prep. The prep was going to the receiving dealer and the selling dealer was just getting the purchase price. I think even the ttl was being collected by the receiving dealer. Anyway, the receiving dealer had agreed to the deal before the guy bought it, but when the bike was received, the dealer was taking its sweet time getting the bike prep done. I mean, c'mon, what incentive do they have to get the other dealer's customer's bike ready. They'd rather be working/prepping for their own customers, no?

This is all off of memory, so my details are sketchy. Man, I could swear it was someone here at HDF.

Personally, I'd get my local dealer to work a dealer trade before going the route described above. My dealer worked a trade for my '07 Road King and I think all three parties involved were happy. I KNOW I WAS.

Has anyone heard of buying a Harley from one dealer and having it delivered to another dealer. In other words, buying a Harley from a dealer out of my area and having it delivered to a dealer closer to me?
I tried to do that this summer (2007) while in Palo Alto, CA. First I tried to buy the bike locally but they wouldn't sell it to me. Yep ... that's right ... they refused to sell me a bike because I was not a California resident. Funny thing is that I was teaching a class at Stanford and was there almost 6 weeks, and if I had listed the Stanford address they would have done it ... but I made the mistake to tell them I was there just for the summer.

Anyway, I then tried to buy it and take delivery in southern Utah where I live. They refused to do that as well. "Too much paperwork," was the reason. And it wasn't just one dealer but three of them in the San Francisco area. It ended up for the best since I got a better deal back home anyway (especially after showing them the prices I'd found in Cali). Since then I've come across another half-dozen folks that have told of similar stories.

IF they do it,make sure they trade with the other dealer, and don't buy it,or you'll be buying a used bike.

In 1997, I bought anew 1998 FXSTCin Wa. and never had any warrenty problemsat home (Ga). We stopped to get a t shirt (Cycle Barn in Lynnwood) and wound up with a new bike.
I think the fly and buy would be a great vacation if your in the market for a new bike.
