This is my first Harley and it is a 2005 Road King. Just wondering are they notoriously loud when shifting gears especially when down shifting?? It seems to make a loud Clunk. I just changed the tranny oil. Didnt really help much. Any input appreciated. Thanks

What kind of oil did you use in the tranny. I use Redline Shockproof Heavy which works great and dampens the sound some. I'm not sure how loud notoriously loud is but they do clunk which is normal. Now this is not the same thing as when a dealer tells yousomething isnormal, everything with them is normal.

The Redline works, I've got 3 bikes that aren't Harley's and they all have a "clunk".....or did until I switched from the factory oil.
I would have to say that you are getting the normal Harley gear sounds. My 06 is the same. You get used to it real quick, and soon you won't notice it anymore.
The sound tells me that I have shiffed gears. Likehaving a digital guide. If you think your RK is loud try shifting a solid mount sporty it just about bucks you off.
I will second the use of the Red Line ShockProof......it sure quited down the tranny on my 03', but I cant say it was overly loud when shifting.....once in a while when going from N to 1st you would get that clunk.....but that was about it. It just seems like the Red Line dampened it quite a bit.
