i have found that the best way to keep warm is to break the wind with a full windshield, wind deverters and soft lower guards on the highway bars. this combo works great and can ride in temps down to 30. dress in full leather with fleese under and good ski gloves. i can ride for hours.

Silk long johns, levis and layers. Winter gloves with gauntlets. Leather jacket with a full snap-in liner and chaps. Fleece turtle neck and a full face helmet. However, I do think it's time for me to get some Gerging electric gear.
Hey Whaap, how cold does it get in Tucson? We in So Cal bitch when it gets in the 50's

Thanks for the reply Freekdawg. Layering seems to be a problem. I feel that toomany layersare bulky and restrict movement. Thank you.
Layers are the answer.

Default RE: Cold gear question

Last year I had a sportster, with limited wind protection from the shield.
I wore two pair of long john bottoms, cotton next to skin and part wool over them, then my levis, then my chaps. I put a balled up fleece throw, small, in my crotch to block the cold air since the chaps have an open crotch.
I wear the sheep skin boots from australia with the wool lining, and I wear a long john wool over a cotton shirt, with a wool flannel, and then my leather jacket with it's thermolite liner.
A wind blocking hood at night with no helmet.
I wore thermolite lined leather gloves with the long cuffs and they work sometimes, but finger tips got cold on snowy rides, of which I did 2 or 3 last year.
One of my biggest problems was the goggles fogging up when I stopped at lights and such. I'm considering a heated helmet this year, at least heated face shield.

This year, I have an ultra classic with lower and upper fairing. I bought gerbing heated jacket liner and pants liner and gloves. I haven't worn any yet, in fact the pants liner got here today.
I bought a pair of under armour cold weather gear underwear and will try those under the chaps this year. I also got a pair of electric chaps for $30 that I may never need, but they'll be there if I do, or have apassenger that does.
When I figured, I paid less for the jacket and pants liners, both gerbing, off ebay than I would have for either piece in the store. Paid more for the gloves, HD,than either of the liners[sm=jawdrop.gif], but my hands were what was coldest last year, besides my crotch when I didn't protect it.
The chaps didn't block the wind in the crotch area,so I used a balled up blanket last year, but the pants liner is supposed to block the wind well. I'll see

Got, by bid,the pants liners, gerbing, for $62 on ebay, new.
This guy had several new sets for sale/bid. slak00
I suggest a hood with drawstrings over the eyes as well as under, so the wind doesn't get in and circulate cold air on the top of your head. Don't need a head scoop
I was very restricted on my movement before, but this year I hope to be alot more flexible, and comfortable

Thank you for the very informative posts. I am going to spend the money andbuy a good pair of gauntlet gloves and thensome lined pants. I will also keep an eye out for heated gear on e-bay. I never thought of e-bay until reading the replies. Thanks again.

If you are not using heated gloves, try a pair of silk glove liners under your heavy gauntlet gloves. They are light, comfortable and make a difference. You can get them from Cabela's for $6.95.

I went riding in cold weather yesterday for the first time just to get a feel for it and I had this same problem. If I stopped even for a second, my goggles would fog up. Anyone know how to keep that from happening?

Get some heated gear and just keep riding. From Dec - March I can usually get out at least once or twice a month and avoid the ice/snow/salt. Heated gear and a full face helmet allow you to ride in some really cold temps.

Im real cold weather I wear a full face helmet and keep it cracked a tiny bit when I come to a stop. Works great. Wearing an open face helmet in real cold weather would not be enjoyable to me.
