I covered a small tank scratch on my denim black tank with a black Sharpie. Can't tell any difference unless you've got your nose right up the the exact spot and are looking for it.

Underneath the "Support our Troops" ribbon is a nasty scratch and a dent. Also notice the chopped-off front fender with the chrome tip. Tank and fender were damaged in a crash (along with many other parts which I replaced). I've been riding it like this for a couple years. After my divorce is final and if I have any money left, I'll get a nice paint job. Until then, this is fine.

Maybe it's time to add those flame decals to the bike. If the scratch isn't into the metal and it's large enough that requires attention, I would consider decals before attempting touch up paint. Every time I've used touch up paint on my cars, it had that raised paint look. The repair looked just as bad as the original scratch in my opinion.

Touchup with black is easy, if it's not on a prominent part, otherwise forget it: any touch up on a black, glossy, convex shape will stand out like a priest in the snow. I second the paint job option many suggested.

Man! I'd love to do the custom paint. Not in the cards right now
Have a great idea for the paint though!

Thank you all for your ideas and advice.

You can take the touch up paint and use a toothpick and then buff it to a nice shine. That is what I did with my scratch.
