Default Another GPS Question

I know nothing about GPS units for motorcycles....Cabela's has a sale on TomTom One 3rd Edition for $149.99 (free shipping). Maybe I don't need one, as I travel mostly interstates and have my trusty HD road atlas. What's your opinions? Thanks.

I had a Garmin Streetpilot. I absolutely loved it. I didn't really use it to find places so much as I would look to it for directions back from somewhere I had wandered. Also, to find gas/food/motels in unfamiliar places. I had it on my trip to Sturgis and numerous rides around the east coast. I still carried an atlas for 'the big picture', but that Garmin was great for everything else. I lost it in September after hitting an enormous pothole and it went sailing into its own adventures (my fault, the mounting bracket had become loose and I kept putting off fixing it). Once I get enough funds together, I'll be buying the new Zumo.

Don

Ps. Havent' tried the TomTom models, but I hear they're good. I'm getting older and my eyesight needs the bigger screen of the Garmin.

A GPS is a great addition, however, you'll not find one "motorcycle tolerant" for $145. Check out one such as Garmin's Zumo.

I have used a TomTom One for about a year on my Ultra with zero problems. I made my own mount but keep in mind it is not waterproof and that can be an issue.

Have a Tom Tom One I've been using on my ride for 3 months and love it. Portable, touch screen. Fab-ed my own mount for it and best of all, small enough I can put it on my pocket when it starts raining.

I did the same. Designed and fabbed a nice mount and if it does rain I simply put it in my pocket. Other than not being waterproof it has worked fantastic for an entire season so I don't think vibration is an issue.

Great answers, thanks. Do they have an adapter to plug into the cig lighter, or would it have to be 'hot wired'? What type of mounting bracket is available to fit on handlebars?

Do a Google search for "RAM motorcycle mount"
They have a variety of mounts and cable harnesses for different brands of GPS's

FYI - The Garmin 2610 Streetpilot has recenty been discontinued.
They can still be had for about $229 with a full 1 year warranty
if you search on-line. They origionally listed for about $700. The 2610 is waterproof&ruggedised.

I have a Garmin Zumo 450, and I really like it. This summer, on my road trip through the USA, it guided me through 2600 miles of roads I'd never travelled without a hitch. I really like being able to just enter an address and hit "GO", and just following the directions. No stopping to check maps, no writing down directions and having to fish around my pocket to get them while riding, etc...

Here are a couple of shots of it mounted on my bike:

Cheers!

You can get power adapters from the various manufacturers, but also check out Powerlet. They have kits and all sorts of wiring options. You can even make up your own cables, etc...

Cheers!
