Default AZ riding question

This past August I was in PHX AZ area and noticed on the highway that there was a lot of shredded tires on the road. Is this normal for AZ? I see it occasionally where I live and was wondering as it could be quiet dangerous for someone on a bike, especially me as I an thinking of moving there. Is it because of the heat in summer? Thanks.

not sure why it happens. I just thought it was because of a lot of traffic. I was going down I10 in Phoenix a couple years ago and a retread got thrown up in front of me in my cage. It smashed my headlight and grill. Glad I was not riding. Not sure if it is worse there than anyplace else with that much traffic.

I am sure it is because of the heat. August in Phoenix is brutal. 110 + degrees. The rest of the year is great. Year round riding season with very little rain! I can live with that! Spent more than a few summer evenings riding with 1of2 and our other bro. Miss those times!

I agree that the heat is the main culprit. Usually over 100 days ith temps exceeding 100 degrees. Figure asphalt temps probably 25+ degrees hotter. Add that to the friction and you've got some serious heat on those retreaded truck tires!!!

I haven't really noticed any more than any other big city (keep in mind Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the nation.....)

I've had two incidents with these; once in my car one flipped up in front of me and hit and destroyed the right headlight and scratched up the right front pretty good, and once on my Buell when I was riding home from work. It came up too fast for me to avoid (truck had just pulled in front of me and I didn't see it until it was too late). It popped up and hit me on my lower leg, and I swear it felt like something had just ripped off my right calf!

LOL, and the rest of the year is great. I think you missed May, June, July, Sept and sometimes October, and this year which set records for the whole summerwas one of the hottest summers on record. Actually late June and July are usually a little hotter then August except there is usually a little more humidity in August. Basically the whole damn summer is hot and can start sometimes as early as April with 100° + days all the way intoOctober. I'm sure that's why you may see more retreads come off of trucks around here.

Wait until one of the rocks pops up and nails ya. That is a great feeling. I find it hard to keep windshields!

This is something common in most of the states where summer temperatures reach 100+ degrees, with road surface temperatures being even higher.

We see it all the time when on runs.

Many trucks are running 'retreads', and high surface temperatures and high speeds can cause problems..

If following any 18-wheeler you want to either keep a good distance, or pass them as soon as possible.

Could be that the road crews in AZmight notclean objects from the roads and shouldersof as often as they should, but the retread thing is not just isolated to that state...

I would say it is the heat also. The tread has been like that for as long as I remember, and that's over 40 years.
They've been changing the roads to a different type of surface that is blacker and quieter. Quite a reduction in noise. I wonder if the darker color will cause more tread 'detiring'? I'm sure the state will kind of watch this.
Alot of the tread gets picked up by prison crews that pick up trash on gun gangs, as well as the 'adopt a highway' participants that volunteer to pick up the trash along a specific stretch of highway, so the thrown tread won't be documented like it could be.
I do most of my riding on the open highways, and you don't see as much free tread out there, except on the interstates. I prefer less traveled roads.
