Three year old thread rises again. There's even a NEWER motor out now than is being discussed here. But, with the 96" motor now being replaced by the 103", maybe it's time for a new thread comparing the three motors. In stock form, of course.
Did anyone mention the 88 used a spring loaded cam chain tensioner and the 96 uses hydraulic? The spring loaded one can be a weak link and steals horsepower. When replacing cams in an 88 it is recommended to go with gear driven cams which involves additional mods the add to the cost. The 96 cam swap is less expensive because the hydraulic tensioners are a good system.
did all the work myself got most of my parts leftovers from dealerships or online when I was done talking to my local dealership they did the Screamin Eagle stage 3 download remap for a hundred and fifty dollars
I went directly from an 80" Blockhead to a 103" TC, so I guess I missed all the fun in between...
Let's see... From a slab-side shovel, to a blockhead, to a TC 103... Yeah... I guess I hit all the high spots, and passed right by the smaller bumps... lol
I had a 2007 FLSTC with the 96/6 and in stock form and ran hot as hell. Everyday running temps on oil as 250 degrees and on hot days reached 300 degrees. Not to mention the tranny was very noisy. 10 months old and left me stranded on the A/C Expwy. Sold it a month later. Perhaps the newer 96'ers run better but mine sucked. I have a stock 2005 FLSTSCI with the 88 inch and it runs cooler, quieter and has enough power for cruising.
