that having been said - the nice thing about the 550, and even the 450 i think, is that is speaks to you about what you are to do
so you don't really have to look at it when just going along. and it gives you plenty of notice, not something others do.
...
but yes, you can get to paying too much attention to it if you are not careful.
How big a "distraction" it is can depend on where one mounts it also. I ended up mounting mine in the center of the handlebars so it actually has become less of a distraction compared to looking down at the speedo on my tank. I will not mess with it while moving, or really look at the map, but the speed and distance to checkpoint fields are large and right there in front of me.

And as Mark10 has said, the audio cues are almost indispensable in my my book. Without them it becomes a bit more dangerous to have to pay attention to the GPS all the time, but with them it becomes a lot safer than my being distracted with having to look at every street sign coming up to see if I'm about to hit my turn.

So, IMHO, used properly (big IF used properly there) a GPS can be the safest way to navigate.
I mount mine just under the left side handlebar under the clutch housing. All it takes is a quick glance left (all the while keeping an eye on what's in front of me) to see the Zumo. This is far LESS distracting, and doesn't completely divert my eyes, than having to look down at my speedo.

Cheers!

Part of the fun is taking the long way, getting lost, and asking for directions-you meet some interesting people that way. Plus the excuse for being late is unarguable!
