Hi guys, a couple of months since our last chat....
By the way, I wonder which H-D model you prefer, and, more important, why you prefer this model instead of the other. Maybe I will buy one, and I want you to tell me the differences.
Consider this:
1) I absolutely need comfort for me and my girlfriend. I had an 883R last year, I sold it after only 6 months because it had no comfort for the passenger and no wind protection for me (I had no windshield).
2) I like a full, deep engine. I don't race, but I want to feel "that" sensation when I open the throttle.
3) Wind protection. I want it, maybe I will apply a windshield or something like that, which model is better protected?
4) Imagine you don't have any H-D and you are going to own one. Which model would you choose, and why?
If ya grew up on a dirt bike and are pretty sizable like me, you wanna big bike. My RKC fits me. Change a few things, ie: seat, bars Stage one and you're ready to ride. I LOVE the sporties, but at 300# I look like a damn gorilla on a Moped. Not to say they ain't fast as hell and plenny strong, jus too small for my big azz.
Ultra for all the reasons you list. Comfort, wind protection, comfy seat for the S/O, feel the power, good radio and cruise control, room for a week or a night away
As to comfort and wind protection, I feel "very ill equipped" (see pic) to give you "any" advice.
But I can address the "custom" color, YES, get "custom" color, but NOT in kit form, shoot your own.
We had an 01 Ultra, 124" Zipper, Baker 6 spd and the Zepplin air seat. Says it all. Wind protection, Tunes,COMFORT galore, and YES, twistability in the throttle, and $$$$$ But you will have to try a few others on for size and see what fits you. Just keep looking at the sig and posted pics here. There arelots of"AWESOME" rides. Plenty of ideas, and you will get plenty of opinions. Good luck and have a good time here. I am just a li'l partial to Ol' Iron, so don't pay me no matter mind.
Well, I went with the Softtail Custom for a few reasons.
1. I'm tall (6'4") and even though at first I was looking at the Fat boy/Heritage Classic, I found that they were too cramped for my legs.
(I have even put 3" extentions on the Custom for mor comfort.)
2. The seat is rather comfy even for my fat *ss (275#) and the GF liked the thicker foam on the King/Queen seat. I have been on several 250mi. + rides with no problems.
(Of course that's a moot point now since I bought her a Sportster)
3. I really like the way it looks.
As far as Power goes, the 96 has ample oomph.
Color? Buy black (cheapest) and have it painted.

Oooooopsss.....my fault! Forgot to write the models!
1) Dyna Super Glide Custom
2) Dyna Fat Bob
Suggest you try riding one or both two-up first. Otherwise, I would have recommended either an RKC (which I own) or an Ultra, especially if you're doing more than 200 miles. Road test one or both of those models. There's a reason they call these "touring" bikes.
I've had a Sporty and tried the FLH and Softail madels, as well as a V-Rod. For all-round versatility I bought an FXDXT, tore it completly apart and made my own. It's excellent two-up or solo, satisfys my lust for thrust and is easy to find in a crowded parking lot.....I wouldn't pay for a "factory" paint job myself; money better spent on a basic re-spray with $ left over to unlock some performance/comfort/handling.....IfI had to buy again tomorrow; I'd head straight to the Dyna's. I've always considered Harleys to be blank canvasas waiting for your wallet to finish.
