....as a daily commuter in ATL traffic on a bike I can give you this piece of advise..
Get through Atlanta between the following times.
before 6:30am or after 10:00am, before 3:30pm or after 6:30pm Mon-Fri
And if you have ever heard the horror stories of Atlanta rush hour traffic..Believe every word, very hectic, very crowded....

You should take this advise VERY SERIOUSLY !!!
If you hit it wrong you'll reget it.

I travel through Atlanta at least twice per month. I plan the trips to leave TNat the right time toarrive in Atlanta at specific times. It can be the difference between cruising right through at 75 mph orcreeping alongbumper-to-bumper for three hours.

Did the conductor thing back in '01- sounds like you have a better job lined up-I ended up going back to my old job.
I live over in Lancaster and made the trip 2x's. The first time I went down I did the I85 route-not good. Coming back I took I20 up to Columbia,SC and picked up I77 to I81. That worked better for me and used that route for the last phase of my training. I81 would be out of the way for you.
When I was down there, they gave us vouchers for Wendys, Waffle House, and a bbq joint called OB's. OB's was good southern chow.
Watch out for the 'weasels'! The instructors I had were good folk.
Hope all works out for you!

Dave... if this is a round-trip, you might consider taking I-75 home to the 'Burgh. it's a straight shot to Cincy, then I-70 east to Pgh. when i lived in Atlanta and went back home to Washington County, that's the way i went...750 miles door-to-door.

have an Iron for me before you leave Pgh, k?

61panhead,
I appreciate your input and will definately take that info seriously. I hate traffic at rush hour and Atlanta sounds like it would be a nightmare.

beltfedM60E3,
My son has a shop over in Hanover. He makes custom chopper/bobbers parts. Sorry to hear the conductor thing didn't work out for you. I hear they make some nice money but are on call 24/7. I am not sure what all this job will entail but I am looking forward to getting back to work.

wydgage,
I am definately going to research all options for my trip so I can avoid any traffic. Now I am just hoping the weather gets better in 2 weeks for the trip. Hate the thoughts of not being able to ride the bike down.

Good luck Dave sounds like a great trip. I have three good buds that work for NS 2 engineers and one inmaintanance. They're all still pretty young so mostly extra board 24/7 duty but damn those engineers make some serious loot!

beltfedM60E3,
The name of his shop is BelMit Development, LLC. They started out building parts for race cars and go-karts and also building race motors. Now they have moved into designing and building custom parts for choppers/bobbers.

BoneCrusher,
I am looking forward to the ride, I just hope the weather here turns around in 2 weeks. Right now it is not looking real great over the next 5 days. After sitting at home since mid October it was nice to get a call to come to work. I am on the other end of that fairly young (LOL) so for them to give me a chance feels nice. The job classification is Fireman/Oiler which from what I know is a laborer.

Good luck with the new job Dave. I've looked into hiring on at NS as I work at a Lincoln/Mercury dealer, and with Ford closing dealers left and right I wonder what the future may bring.

Dave2800 congratulations on the new Job what you hire out as a Brakemen. I worked for the Railroad for 35 years hired out 1971 with Penn Centeral as a Brakemen then qualified Conductor in 1972. Worked local freight and passenger. Then Conrail then Metro North as one was taken over by the other. Retired in 2006. Again lots of luck. IN fact I live 50 miles north of N.Y.C. and looking to move down to Stockbridge GA. Thats close to Mcdonough nice weather there good roads traffic heavy at times. Cold at night this time of year lows of 29 day time 55 and above but not colder then 29 at night some 70 and above days also. I read the other posts your be in the shops more reg hours but you can get bumped a lot as a new guy. Yes the RR is not for every one on call 24/7 paid when worked .Away from home a lot on long haulfreight. Which I was able to stay away from. Took me 5 years before I could hold regularrun . But when its busy and you don't turn down the work when called you can make all kinds of money. Depends what part of the country you work. After Katrina I heard from guys that I worked with they were paying Housing and Bonuses for Guys to get qualified and work down there No it an't for every one but once you build up seniority you can make some good money. Yes i worked days nights holidays missed a lot of family time when my kids were growing up but they had a roof over there heads food cloths education.Would I want my kids to wotk on the RR no They got good Educations and are doing better then I did which is what its all about. But for me the RR was good seed money to give my kids what they needed. I don't think they realize how I earned my money. Its kinda like The song CATS IN CRADLE by Harry Chapin. The retirement money is good thank GOD for that.
