Default Touring Italy

Looking at a touring trip to Italy this year, probably with Edelweiss Bike Tours...anyone here bike in Italy or use Edelweiss? Should I opt for the 1200 BMW over a Road King or Heritage for two-up riding over there? They provide the bikes.....

I can offer two opinions and take them for just that. First, the drivers in Italy are simply insane. Even with the tiny cars they drive you're still tempting fate. Secondly, the roads are good but narrow and sharp-turned. When we drove there last year we kept telling ourselves that it would have been great to have our bikes. That was until we drove the mountains and realized that HD's would scrape more than a substitute teacher's fingernails on a blackboard. My advice is to find a six story parking garage. If you can get to the top and back down again in a RoadKing in under eleven seconds, by all means rent the RK. Otherwise, anything else is the better choice. Ray

Thanks for the heads up; sorta figured the roads would be pretty snakey; looking at a detailed Michillen map of the area and they look like a plate of spaghetti dropped on the floor. They rent BMW 1200's and Ducati's as well, but I don't think the Ducati would be very comfortable 2-up for a middle aged couple. Wish they had Moto Guzzi's.....I'll probably rent/ride whatever BMW they have over here before the trip to get used to the Teutonic way of riding.

Like codyshop said about the roads being narrow with tree lined shoulders. Beautiful country though,I love northern Italy and the Italian Alps.

Let me tell you something about riding in Italy.
If you go in the North, you ride fast, you will see great mountains, but be sure to keep your eyes open, because X-5, Cayennes and Porsches will race next to you.
If you visit the south, and I live in Palermo, prepare to experience no laws and insane traffic.
The prize will be magnificent views, great cuisine, marvellous sea and amazing sunsets.

Whatever your itinerary will be, just choose a Road King. And if you come to Sicily give me a shut, it will be a pleasure ride with you througout my country and "connect" Italy to US not only virtually, like now.

I visited the Tuscany area last year and would highly recommend that area for a great ride.I was with family and couldnt rent a bike but hope to go back and do it someday. The drivers in the bigger cities are crazy but seem to know what they are doing-didnt see any wrecks.

I've never ridden in Italy, but I've been there several times... I think 7 times now.
Traffic is crazy, especially in the bigger cities.

I believe one of the hdforums members lives in Milan. His username, if I remember correctly, is 99octane or something to that effect. Perhaps he can offer some info.

Go for the BMW. They are built for the Alps. Comfy, go far, fun in the curves, heated grips, ABS, good protection, etc. You will want something lithe and nimble for the twisty roads. Besides, it will be a nice contrast to the H-D you're used to. I rode the Swiss and Italian Alps summer of '06 and had no traffic issues. Only thing to watch for is tourist buses swinging wide on the alpine passes. Get ready for a memorable time and ride. The roads are fantastic, the scenery the same.

For a preview I left a ride report here: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=153666with images and 13 pass ride videos, including those of Italy.

Will you be taking the early June ride in Tuscany? I have just confirmed my spot on the June 5th tour.
