It just became legal in Texas, but you have to drive 20 MPH under the posted speed limit.
Saw a Harley rider do it a few weeks ago, but he wasn't on a bagger - I'd think twice about it if I was riding a bike with a fairing and bags. Not enough clearance.
Annie, I heard the rumors of legal lane splitting in TX, but went to the DPS site and pulled up the traffic laws, and to the TX House & Senate sites and pulled up the bills, etc., and found only that someone had proposed a bill. Unless they recently passed it, which I doubt 'cause they're not in session, it never became a law. Surely would like to see it happen!
Sorry, this topic has got me all crazy. Here is another weird one in California...
When I built my custom bike last fall and had it inspected by the DMV, who then had me have it inspected by the CHP, I was told by both the DMV and CHP that motorcycles were not required to have turn signals in the state of California.
To make a legal lane change in California, you must signal for 100 feet before changing lanes.
So how the ???? can a motorcycle without turn signals make a legal lane change in California? Hold your arm out for 100 feet?
Yep, just like ya had to do back in the early '70s and before when few bikes had signals. Or like back in the '50s when even some cars didn't have signals, or the ol' coots drivin' 'em didn't wanna use them thar new-fangled thangs!
i split lanes all the time but every time i see a chp i stop....cuz im still not clear on what theyll do, especially with my loud pipes.(they can fine you)...anyways all of you be safe however you choose to ride, and bikergirl40,quit yer cryin about everything this is biker chat not a knitting circle.
Aw now her point about sneaking up on a cager is a good point. Bikes that are showroom stock, especially most jap bikes, are TOO damn quiet. I will admit, when driving a car and I do not hear them coming then all of a sudden they are buzzing by my side mirror, its a major surprise, like a horror movie. I try to watch for bikes splitting lanes when I drive my car in slow traffic, but if they are quiet they can surprise the he!! out of you.
Quiet bikes should be illegal, sounds funny but I am serious and have heard many cagers say the same thing.
i agree about the quiet bikes being a liability. i respect that some people _dont_ want to make a lot of noise, but i have had the (admittedly rude) loud exhaust save my butt _multiple_ times by alerting cagers of my presence before they accidently/negligently violate my right of way (yeah, i know its theoretical, trust me...).

I think we established, long ago, on this site, that it's ok to have a difference of opinion. I have simply voiced my opinion and backed it up with logic. What's with the attack? I get the distinct impression that you happen to think what ever YOU do is ok.... Isn't THAT a shame!
My point is about not taking stupid chances...Correct me if I'm wrong, but your's seems to be "screw 'em all! I'm doin what I wanna!"
bikergirl,i in know way attacked you...i was playing with you,(joking) ,bustin your ***** etc. sorry you took it that way. ill play nice from now on..ma!
