Had to go into the big cities on the ride during our last ride through IL, KY, TN, NC, SC, GA and back home to MO, the people in the major metros scare the hell out of me, darting, swerving, line to line in lanes while they all are doing something in their cages other than driving. Saw countless numbers of morons texting, a few eating/drinking with one hand while holding a phone with the other, saw business types rumaging around in briefcases or paperwork piles trying to find something while holding a phone to their ear or while speaking to someone using a ear bud but no hands on the wheel. Mommas' were the worst, turned full around at 70+ mph yelling at children or playing with them in the back seats, doing something with kids or pets or both and no concern as to what they were 'getting away wwith' at that time.
Major problem I saw, state police in almost all of the states we traveled drove right on by these people or saw them at least and gave them no second thought as they hammered away on mounted laptops in their cars.
Yes it is getting scary!
And the worst thing is, it's the ones you don't see that are the most dangerous.
Sitting at stop lights are really beginning to unnerve me lately.
Yeah, it's bad...really bad
I live in the chicagoland area and see it constantly. The highways around here are mostly 4 lanes each direction, packed with cars and the posted limit of 55 is treated as a suggestion...if your going less than 80 in the hammer lane you better get out of the way. It's like Talladega on race day...put a phone in the hand of an idiot and it's a recipe for death. Most people treat driving as some kind of game and don't fully comprehend the risk and consequences of that behavoir...they simply endager the lives of others around them and think..."it's ok, everyone does it..nothing will happen to me..I only look away for a moment"...absolute fools
It will continue until there is real accountablility...strict enforcement and unacceptable consequences...like a $5000 fine for the first offense and suspensions from there.
Unfortunately, the only way these idiots quit is when something catastrophic occurs to them...but then it's already too late.
When I'm in my cage, I like to get up beside them and lay on the horn...make 'em jump.

This my worst fear. It's a situation where you have almost no out. When I'm sitting at a stop light, my eyes are constantly moving between the intersection and my rear view mirror. If I see a car approaching from the rear, I'm pumping my brakes to make sure they see me. I'll be investing in a flashing tail-light soon.
went i ride thru the major cities, i get in the far lane, twist the wick and go as fast thru the city as possible. if i get stopped by law enforcement, i explain the situation you all have just described, say i am running for my life to get out of the city and the crazyness, and bear the consequences. So far, after 3 traffic stops, no tickets, just comments to slow down. my .02
law enforcement knows the what is happening, they just cannot police it routinely, their process is an exception process with major issues receiving most of their time and minor issues such as traffic being lower on the issues list

very very rarely will i put myself in a intersection that i dont have a way out, i always try to get to the outside lanes and plenty of room in front too i know its not afial proof way but it helps and has saved me cpl times
Just a note to bigskyroadglide and other bikers that think his way...
Do NOT, I Repeat, DO NOT try this in GESTAPOLAND; errr I mean Canada...
If you do; and are stopped, be prepared to leave your scoot locked up for 7; yes that's right, 7 days and have about $480.00 with you to pay the fine.
Cagers can do what you suggest; but heaven forbid if a biker exceeds the speed limit even slightly.
Just a heads up....
