road back in the 70's and early 80's
didn't ride till '06 and then not much
picked up an 07 ultra
rode like 8k last year

2 rode trips totally about 3k+

should i take the BRC or the ERC or both
My story is identical. I did however take the BRC an was glad I did. I have also purchased the Ride Like A Pro DVD and will take the ERC this year.... Do yourself a favor and take the BRC and then follow up with the ERC in the next year.......

whaap, I'm also a "former" instructor, and I'd question that post also about being "thrown out of class." You and I both know that if the instructors follow the curriculum, it takes extreme problems before someone is dismissed from the class, but it does happen. Some people trully shouldn't be driving a motorcycle for their own safety.

There are, unfortunately, bad instructors with prejudices toward specific bike modelsthat sometimes surface. Harley, btw, was the last of the major bike manufacturers to get "On board" and endorse motorcycle training, and then they offered their own class.....

take the BRC this year, then the ERC next year

I rode from 73, through the mid 80's.... got the fever from time to time... but it passed.... then I bought a Honda 1100 spirit in 2002. I took the BRC in '04 with 40k on the honda's clock....because I'm open minded... I came away with new insight. I took the ERC in '05 with 65k on the clock, again I learned more.

It's a question of can YOU learn? or not....I can

When I first learned how to ride, I had just gotten out of the USAF, and bought a 66 Triumph 650... WAY too much bike to learn on. Instructions were, "this is the clutch, this is the brake, that's the throttle, here's the kick start.... have at it! "

I'm re-retaking the ERC on March 15.... not because I have to... because I want to....and it's (IMHO) money well spent.

I've had HD, Metric, Sports Bike, and Sports Tourer riders for instructors, I've never heard any one of them put down a riders choice of bikes. Well... there was a guy who bought a Fat Boy for his first bike ( and he wasn't very good on those "mini-bikes"

My wife and I took the BRC, she has a trike and wanted to try out 2 wheels.... hadn't riden for 25 yrs.... We had one gal who really should not have been there..... she was HIGH maintance and every time she dropped the bike.... which was every lap.... she expected someone else to pick up the bike.... she didn't come back the next day..... the instructors really had their hands full with her.....

If you have your license the ERC is for folks with some time under thier belt and may get you a discount on insurance. Also is 1/2 the price or less then the BRC out here in CA.

BRC is probably a waste of your money...I took both within about a year of each other and it was not worth it.But that is my opinion. I too had a really bad taste in my mouth after spending $225 and watching folks drop or get kicked for not knowing how to ride int he BRC. (I passed but it doesn't mean it was a good class).

The Riding like a Pro Class would be a good alternative....I find I practice the information on the videos more then anything.

I have been riding for 35+ years and I had been off bikes for a couple of years and got the itch again. took the riders edge course. it was a beneficial supplement to me. my dad also took the course, he has been riding over 50 years and used to flat track andhill climb back in the day (50's) he thought the same as me. it comes down to an open mind and learning what you can where you can. jmo
