The Basic course is intended for people who have never even set their butts on a motorcycle. Youno doubt could pick up a few pointers but you would truly be bored with most of the class. Definetly take the ERC. It will be much more beneficial for you. (This advice comes from a fomer MSF instructor)

I'd take both. Can't hurt. I take the MSF experienced rider course every spring. It's great practice, fun, and I usually learn something new. If you don't have the "Ride Like a Pro" DVD you should buy that also.

Might me just me, but I have two reasons. First was that I signed the wife up for the basic course, telling them that she had never ridden before. I was assured that they would "teach her to ride". Her first mistake she was kicked out of class, and I was told that the class was too big to spend time on individule students. $180 flushed. The second is that I had been riding for 35 years when I was made (by the Navy) to take the ERC. They tried to get people to ride like you would never ride in the real world, all the while giving me a hard time for riding a Harley. I was only one of two Harley riders in the class, and the rest were Crotch Rocket riders, including the instructors.

I can see where that would leave a "bad" taste in your mouth. Unfortunate, tho. Momma took it, and we ended up riding in "white out" conditions a couple of times because of snow squalls in April. YUK! But she passsed, with only one drop. I was definitely the oldest one in the class, and wore my HD shirts, etc. The instructors were GREAT, and we joked about HD's with the class.

I took the BRC and they definately helped one on one if needed. There were quite a few times where the whole class would be done with an excersise except for one or two and they would make us all sit there and wait until the other students got it done right. I recomend it to pretty much anyone new to riding or wanting to get their license as a way to learn, and not take the road test.
You may not ride how they teach in the real world but the point of the class is you should (for the most part maybe not swerving one handed) or to prepare you for something that might come up in the real world.
As for getting made fun of for riding a HD grow a thicker hide and deal with it.
