I have this also posted in the Dyna forums and haven't gotten any replies after about 45 hits so I thought I'd try it here. Sorry for cross posting. Please be gentle...
My Neice and Nephew both have reciently gotten Dynas. He pulled the baffles out of the stock exhaust. I know it reduces back pressure and lessens HP somewhat, but since he did nothing to adjust the carbs (or anything else) what problems might this cause?
He's probably gonna be running lean. Just like when you put on some better breathing aftermarket pipes. He needs a rejet. Check his plugs and see how they look.
With the risk of being repetative (I posted this in another forum) Here is what I do with the stock mufflers. After pulling the insert out, purchase some 1-3/4 inch exh pipe tubing (got mine from the local NAPA store) and cut to the same length as the originals. If needed, tune the sound by drilling a few 3/8 holes in the tubing (optional) and insert them into the original housings (one small tach weld holds them in). Then pull the carb and increase the pilot jet 1 size and shim the main jet needle about .010. Also remove the idle jet plug and increase the setting for the best warm (not hot) idle. Mine is set up this way and I get 42 mpg on the hiway and about 30 in town if I don't rod it too much. Sounds bitchin and runs perfect.
