Default Need some opinions

I know it comes down to which one i want but I would like to hear some opinions. I am looking at trading my 1990 1200 sportster for a 1974 iron head 1000 sportster. I have just really liked the looks of the older ones. Both bikes have lots of custom work done to them. (drag bars, larger tanks, pipes, etc.) I am attaching a pic of each bike. The grey bike is mine and the orange one is the one I made swap for. Both motors are fairly fresh with new parts and seem to be in about the same condition. I'm just not sure how the 74 would do on long interstate runs which I will be doing some this year. Would you make this swap?

gotta figure why he wants to swap? Prolly too much wrenching? Still I like the old ironheads...
Tuff call to be honest. I know I would have to go into the motor to get more HP if I were to trade. You will see a large diff in power. One thing is sure, the 74 will be more unique by far.
I think I prolly would...

Have you rode it? What the power comparison like? Is the power real important to you?

No I havent riden it yet. He needs to put a new throttle cable on it. My wife likes to ride with me as well. I'm not sure if the 1000 would have enough in it for both of us. Especially on the interstate. That is part of the reason I am asking.

Anymore opinions? If you had the chance to make this trade would you? I'm torn. I like the old bikes but may give up on some power and not as a nice long distance ride.

Not sure if I would do the trade although I would definitely buy the 74 outright and keep whatever I had. Me, myself, I wouldn't be too comfortable with the 74on long interstate trips, unless I knew how to wrench on the side of the road and had gone over the motor myself prior to leaving. Sounds like you know what you're doing around engines but I'd get the 74 checked out by someone who is familiar with them especially as it sounds like you can't even start her up right now no less take it for a spin.Just my opinon......

I'm not sure I'd make the trade, This would be something I'd consider for a second bike. Plus being an older bike requiring a tad bit more maintenance. longer rides would be a bit more uncomfortable for you and your pass. Just my opinion.....

I had a '73 sporty, and IMHO I would not do the trade. But like EVO80 said, buy it outright if you really like it. My father has a 2003 sporty and IMHO it is a much nicer bike then the '73 was, let alone more relieable. I would not trust taking a '74 on any long trips, parts are hard to come by if you get stranded. Just my .02

Considering what your plans are for the summer and if you already have confidence in the 90, I would keep it.IMHO
