The 883 is a cute little bike for hopping around town. There are a few things you could do to upgrade the comfort level.sooner than not when you start hanging with the other Harley guys in your area you will start planning roadtrips, thats when you will find out your cute bike is a bit uncomfortable especially if your wifes bottom side is much bigger than a size 5. There just not much room for her.Friends I ride with(we all ride heritages)onlystop maybe every 80-90 miles thats a long time for her to sit on that skinney seat.
You make your own desision but listen to what others on this forum say. They have been around awhile and know.I know money maybe an issue but dont buy something because its affordable then have to upgrade in a couple of months once you realize you like taking roadtrips.

I'm looking at a Sportster 883 custom for my wife and me as well. I'm 180 and she's about 115 pounds.

Mostly due to finances can’t afford to go bigger yet and not sure how wife will take to riding a lot also.

I am hopeful but may end up just riding solo mostly. The 883 on rides I’ve taken is powerful enough on the highway but I agree bigger is better here...if you can afford it. For trips I thought about getting a tall sissy bar and luggage rack and strapping a very large backpack onto it for our luggage, saddlebags maybe too.

Whatever you get, Enjoy!

Pat,

Great plan. Arleen and I sure enjoy the ride more now that she has her own. There are never discussions about what to take or not take anymore. We have room for all her stuff now. I still don't take any stuff, but she has room for her stuff between both bikes.

Regards,

Bill

Bill, Unfortunately, I carry more crap than Lynne does. Two bikes were essential for us. Pat

If you can find a 1200, you’ll be fine. My wife fell in love with riding, on a Sportster. The power to weight ratio is better than the big twins. When we had ours, we could run 80mph 2 up easily. We decided to trade for a RK after a 500 mile day. Truth be told, we had a lot of fun on that bike, and both of us have missed it. I like the king better, but if a Sportster fit my budget better, I would ride a Sportster, and be happy with it.

I had a 2000 883 and as far as I was concerned it lacked power and the frame/suspension just didn't cut if for me. I put a 1200 kit on it with a Muk.42mm, which improved the performance end. I brokedown and bought a used 1998 EVO FXD 2 years ago with less than 1000 miles and very pleased with the bike. Adjustable shocks and plenty of throttle. There's a lot of great buy out there secondhand. Good luck
