Default Engine Serial Number Question

I'm a newbie to Harley with an '05 Road King Custom on the way...I'm filling out the MD paperwork for MVA and they are asking me for an "Engine No."...

a) Is the engine number different than the VIN?
b) If so, where is the engine number located?

Thanks!

Left side of motor near the base of cylinders. If it's the original engine, The last 6 digits of the serial number will match the VIN.

Neck numbers and the engine numbers should be the same or VIN .

And yes Harley did the stars on the shovel motors .

Scott, welcome to the forum. The chart below is from my 1971-84 H-D FX-series parts catalog and I also posted it in the other thread. The full seventeen-character VIN should be on the right-hand side of the frame steering head. And then there's an abbreviated VIN on the engine. The abbreviated engine VIN matches with parts of the frame VIN if the engine and frame are original to each other.

Yeah what about this?

I just sold a bike last week or so and the guy is having trouble with Kansas wanting motor numbers. I am heading to see the guy I sold it to, to help figure this out but he said it has 4 stars where the numbers go but no numbers I guess, just stars.

Back when I bought the bike I checked the frame numbers to the title and it was all good. Never thought to look at the motor and now he is getting the run around on tagging this bike and I have a new problem out of no where.

Rather than start a new thread, could you guys tell me what this number on the right side of my bike is called? Also, it doesn't match any of my vin numbers or the numbers on my engine. Thanks for the help!

In 84 Harley moved the engine numbers...they put 4 stars where the numbers were...numbers were moved to primary side under rear cylinder...all 84's have the stars, not just the shovels.
