Discovered a scratch on the tank last night. Actually, thought it was a long hair but it's a scratch. I don't have much experience with scratches. To date it has been simply wash the bike and use some spary wax or Harley gloss on the paint. Thinking of the following steps to help with the scratch and enhance the finish and looking to see if I am heading in the right direction. They will all be applied by hand.
Maquiares- Scratch X
" " "- Number 7 Polish
" " " - NXT Spray wax
The bike is typically washed once a week and a detailing spray is used on the paint after the wash. That is why Idecided not to use a paste or cream wax.
I use a mild polish with a buffing head called a 1 1/2 inch mushroom head buffer. It's a small semi round buffeing pad bitthat costs about $3. Tool shops have them and I've seen them for sale at motorcycle swap meets. I then put it in a battery operated drill atmedium speed. Just apply the polish to the buffing head, and buff gently. Keep repeating until the scratch is gone.
If you go to Meguiers web site and forums, you'll find all the answers you want on detailing and scratch removal. Scratch-X is good, and so is the NXT waxes. I'd check with those on that forum before using the polish which may cause your clear-coat to haze.
Funny you should mention it. I "discovered" some Scratch X at Lowes last Friday buying bird seed. I knew I had a scratch on top of my tank and bought it to try. Friday night I washed my bike with Turtlewax Zip Wax Carwash and blew it dry with the leaf blower. Saturday morning I got up early and pushed the bike out into the light and put a little Scratch X on a microfiber pad and buffed for a while, buffed with a clean microfiber pad and repeated. SCRATCH GONE. I was amazed. I thought I was going to have to live with that scratch right there in front of me until I got a new paint job.
By the way. If you have a Dyna and the key falls out of the ignition when you are at the gas pump. Don't lean over while sitting on the bike and wearing azipped upjacket to pick up the key. Get off the bike and pick up the key.
