I am considering putting some chrome on the handlebars of my 05 FLSTFIAE, I have a couple of questions that I am hoping someone can provide some insight.
I have proviously changes the stock hand grips with HD Flame grips, now I want to add some more chrome. If I decide to change my stock handlebars with a chrome set, can my existing handle grips be re-installed or would they be damaged when they are getting removed? Second item, I plan to change hand levers, switch housings etc to chrome, would it not look complete if the stock stainless handlebars are not chromed as well. How much labour with the dealer gouge me to do all this?
Hey Tracy
When you say "I previously changed" I'm assuming that you installed the grips yourself. If you were able to open the shells and remove the idle/throttle cables without loosing the furrels and install new grips you are more than capable of doing what you want yourself. If you installed the left grip without glue your good to go otherwise you'll need to gently work a flat blade between the grip and handle bar working slowly while lightly twisting. Hopefully it will come off without damage. As for changing everything else get a copy of the service manual for your bike. Everything you need to know is in it. If your not changing the stock bar profile, going to braided contols or runnung wiring inside the bars this is a pretty easy do. My mechanically challenged neighbor had the same thing you want done to his Springer and they picked his pocket for $250.00 he supplied all the chrome.
Good Luck
Nothing like the sparkle of newly polished chrome in the morning sun!
Sorry Dude, When I said "I had the gripped changed" I meant me as the owner of the bike. I actaully had the stealer do it. I am mechanically inclinded, but I was warned from fellow riders that the throttle grip was trickly exactly as you stated. So would you say it could be done (Re-using the grips) or will the dealer try to sell me another set. One more stupid question is it possible to purchase a single grip (left side) just in case?
Usually can't buy just one grip unless they happen to have a single around. As far as removing it ,once you open up the housing and can get under the front edge of the grip, some carb spray cleaner and a thin bladed screwdriver will be all you need to remove it. A little spray under the grip, work it around the grip with the blade of the screwdriver and it comes off easily. I use come compressed air and it does the job too. They are fairly easy to remove if you take your time and don't rush into it. They can also be replaced on the new bar too.
As far as the chrome controls, you can do that too, here's the info to help you out there, this is for a bagger, but the same thing applies to your bike, just less switches in the controls.. https://www.hdforums.com/m_217399/tm.htm
