I never knew it was this way but since joining HD Forums I have been amazed at the seemingly large number of people that apparently live their lives in constant fear, or at the least paranoia.

Do most people worry about crashing? About losing their job? About their spouse cheating on them? About their kids going bad, or getting hurt every time they leave the house?

I agree that this is about freedom of choice but I worry that an even bigger issue is the pussyfication of America (no offense intended, ladies. I often think the strongest members of our society are the females). Jeez, during the Great Depression thousands of Americans rode the rails looking for work and we seem frightened about getting on the paved road. Today, it is "call the police, I think I heard a noise in the back yard".

Sorry for the mild rant. Ride safe and ride free.

Anything other than Pro-Choice, is Anti-Freedom, and thus Un-American.
In term of "this" conversation, I totally agree! In terms of what "pro-choice" usually refers to in our society, I couldn't disagree more!

I'll just leave it at that!

Protective gear will protect you against grinding on asphalt.
Even a mild slide can leave you badly maimed without it.
Armor will protect you against FALL impact (falling down from normal riding position, height of fall is the only factor here).
Nothing will protect you against speed impact. A helmet will offer your head good protection, but it can't do miracles.
While gearing for a fall can greatly improve your chances after a light accident, NOTHING will save you from a bad one due to reckless riding.
So, I'm all for protective gear, but I'm even more for CAREFUL riding.
Amen to that! When people ask me if my riding outfit is hot and wonder how I can stand it in mid summer temps, I tell them, "I'd rather sweat than bleed!" I've done the bleeding part before. Sweating is a LOT less stressful!

Ride Safe,
Steve R.

I see the first hand results of driversmistakes whether it be the fault of thecaged or uncaged. As you all know the rider is the one who pays the price. I often leave work on my motorcycle and my co-workers wonder how I can do that. I am not one to live scared, I never tell others to wear a helmet or give them grief if they dont have it on, but I choose to wear it all the time. I buy a comfortable one and replace it every few years. Leather well thats another story, when its friggen hot I find it hard to wear. Jeans and gloves are a must though. The key is to ride with your head on a swivel, pay attention to everything that is happening and every you think is going to happen. Ride with the people you know, andbe familiar with their style. Don't be afraid to tell someone to pull there head out of there @$$ if they are making the ride unsafe for others.

On the other hand...

I saw a guy riding the other day with his full armor jacket, full face helmet and gloves on. Why bother riding at all? What kind of freedom is there being all bundled up? Why not just drive your car? I mean, isn't the feeling of freedom the reason we all ride...or is it just to save on gas? If so, they have some Hyundai's out there that get great gas mileage.

Ya see, different sidesto this. It's called "choice".
