Any suggestions for a DOT approved half helmet that is low profile and doesn't make my head look huge. I wear a medium helmet, head is 7 1/4, but helmets look ridiculous on me. I have a non-DOT skull cap now but need a DOT to ride on base.
Generally fiberglass helmets are lower profile than cheaper plastic ones because they are stronger and require less foam padding. Check these out, http://store.helmetsrus.com/shsthe.html
Wife and I just purchased the HD Kevlar Carbon FIber halves a couple weeks ago.
Look and fit real good.
Best of all, feels like it's not even on!
Bad side I can't get the thng to fit in my saddlebags! Argghh....
I have the Daytona Skull Cap Carbon fiber. Suggested retail on their website is $150, you can get them all day online for $100, and I got mine for $55 out the door, sales tax included...at a Harley dealership, even! I was lucky to get it on closeout. One thing I don't like about it is there isn't any retention device to keep the excess strap length from flapping around in your face while riding. I just tuck the excess back under the chin and it works just fine. I'm thinking of putting a snap on it, though, to make it easier and quicker to deal with the excess.
Sealbeachbum had a good link up, though. I think those are just what you're looking for....something reasonably DOT approved, reasonably lightweight, and CHEAP! I don't buy helmets online because of the shape of my head. I've had to eliminate some excellent helmets because ofthis....Bell, Nolan, Shoei. HJC fits my head wonderfully, but they don't make a DOT half helmet light or cheap enough for me.
Thanks everyone, I will check out all of the suggestions. Teek, I have the excess strap problem now on my current lid, I double it back through the end by the clasp, can't wait to not have to do that. Old95, I will have to hit the gym more and just beef up my shoulders and neck to balance the huge head look out.

The strap on my Vega has about 6" of excess length. I had aseamstress sew a1" piece of Velcro (soft side) to the end of the strap. I put another 3" piece (rough side) on the strap that'sunder my chin. Tighten the strap & attach the strap end to the piece under my chin. Totally invisible, easy to put on & take off & no loop hanging down. Total cost, $3.00.
