I've resigned myself to the fact that it is impossible for me to walk in there without buying a new HD tshirt. I have more than 40 of them after a year of having my bike...
Sometimes you get out cheap. The last time I was at my closest dealer, I stopped by for an o ring and two screws and the guy behind the counter told me to catch him next time.
Well, when they do that, they know there will be a next time, because I'll remember not having to pull my wallet. I like that philosophy.
The local tire store the same way. I had to take my wifes car in with a tire going down from a nail. They can tell that the tires are original equipment. The made up a repair order and after fixing the flat and rebalancing the wheel, made a point of saying that there was no charge. I needed a battery for my PU truck a few months later, guess where I headed? Yup, I went to the tire store that fixed the tire for free and I now call it my tire store.
Since I am a recreational biker (I have a job), I tend to make big purchases online or from Indys. I do my own work too, but if I have a chance, I will pay that dealer back for not charging me the $5 that the parts they gave me the next chance I get.
I don't begrudgethat dealers need to charge a lot to cover their overhead. I hope they don't begrudge me because I seek out my best deal. I shop everywhere, but I want them to stay in business, so the next time I need a stock part it is just a short ride over to get it.
After many years of being a gun nut I finally got control of the spending, or maybe it was the wife that got control of me? In any case, HD has got me going again and more than one morning now I have woken up with the wife standing over me, card statement in one hand and a frying pan in the other. Guess I need to work on my strategy, (you know all that chrome stuff was for you, dear) and (you really look good in that HD shirt that’s about 4 sizes bigger than you). Oh well, see ya at the dealer.
