Hmmm... Well, dont use your clutch to get it to run at slow speeds, use your throttle and rear brake, feather them together to move slowly and make stable turns. You can make quick, aggressive turns easily when you learn to do it right.
The test isnt so daunting. Think of thousands on the road who have passed their tests and still cant f'ing ride their scoot worth a damn.
More advice, ride alone. Less chance of picking up others bad habits.
Look where you want to go, and you will go. Those sporty's handle great.
Why not get a ND learners permit and go home for the test and a SD license?
In order to do that, I'd have to give up my South Dakota citizenship, get a ND license, take the ND test, and I think wait some fixed time before claiming citizenship in SD again. There's some law about 'leaving one state to take up residency in another,' and I don't remember how it reads. That would really mess up my pheasant hunting this fall
Find out what SD uses for it's test and lay out the course in a parking lot and practice. If it is anything like ND it is pretty simple, I passed on my FXDC no problem.
Will the DMV give that info out? There were less-than-forthcoming with answers to questions I had about the CDL test, although it could've been because that was offered through a third-party tester and they didn't want to lead me astray since the tester can choose to make you do any handful of driving tasks.
Between the hassle I had with the HD insurance rep not understanding why I lived in ND when I'm still a SD resident and this, I'll be glad when it's all over. Honestly it was like he'd never heard of anyone going outside their home state to college.
In NC the learners permit is good for 18 months, you just have to ride solo, no passenger.
And at the end of 18 months you can renew.
I know a guy been riding for 4 or so years all on permits.
I took my test on a 1200 custom sportster, the examiner asked me didnt I want to come back with a smaller bike that I would have trouble with the sporty.
Did the test with no problems, but they kind of set you up in my town.
in one direction its a slight downhill so you have to kind of ride the brake so you dont go to fast.
Then at the end you have to turn around and come back, but at the end all the loose bits of asphalt and sand are right were you turn around at.
But any how there was another guy there with a sportster waiting to go after me, he almost dropped his bike but he did pass to.
Check with your dmv to see about getting a permit, here its not legal to lane share so another experianced rider couldnt be beside you.

In NC they give you a book to study before you take the test for the permit and in the book it has illistrations of the type of riding you will be doing for the license, course layouts and all
Take the MSF course. What you learn may save your life.
Read all the threads where someone made a life altering mistake and everyone chimes in with what he did or did not do right. Some people on this site might have good advise but I might not want them to train my son or friend.
If the "Staggered Cones of Impossibility" made you uneasy and you compareda trucksclutch to the Sporty's clutch, please take the course.
Lol, I took my riding test in AZ with my Fatboy. Passed every test with flying colors EXCEPT the cone weave! I doubt even a crotch rocket could have made those turns. Luckily the tester took the size of my bike into consideration and waived that from the test. picked up my endorsment and rode outta there FAST before they could change their mind.

In NC they give you a permit after taking a mutiple choice test. The permit gives you around a yr or so before you need to take the road test. Is it not the same where you are at?
Same here in Washington. We only get 90 days on a permit though. Get a permit and work on your skills... or better yet, take the safety course even though it is a bit of a drive (2hrs).
And btw, if you got a ND permit, can't you get a STUDENT Waiver so that you don't become a citizen of ND?
I went with my wife when she took her mfs course and took it with her . they had those cool yamaha dirt bikes with the big wheel's I done the cone weave at 25 mph and they made me park the bike and watch for the rest of the day.[sm=biker.gif]
