[sm=dontgetit.gif] Most folks go nuts buying chrome and making bike shine more, what exactlly are you planning on "Painting"? I think I would agree with the find non chrome replament parts and sell the chrome, or go the powder coat. But hey to each his own, I think some 180,200, 220 would rought it up enough to gte a good primer to stick once you have a good primer then the paint should stick. Some of the 2 part Poly stuff that is out there you may run in hassels if you try to use, very dangerous stuff be careful when using them, as all paints, but those need extra gear. Just my .02 worth
Thanks for the replys.
pococj - will the krylon or plastikote match the vivid black.
As to why, for me, its about contrast I don't want all black or all chrome. Air cleaner, horn cover, back half of headlight and fender struts painted the same as tins. Still leaves lots of chrome the pipes, wheels, rocker boxes, tranny cover, primary cover, etc.
i like the contrasted look as well, i like the night train with the all black motor too, and alomost everyone has chrome. it's attention to detail that makes a great bike in my opinion, and selling used parts on ebay doesn't usually mean making a profit
Don't use any sandpaper under 600 grit. Chrome will sand up nicely with 600 to 800 grit. Anything more coarse will make gouges in the chrome and if you go to far you will get down to the cooper and the surface will be very uneven. Clean it really good to start with just so you make sure you get the chrome polish off. Just use a light grit sandpaper enough to dull it up. Shoot a light primer coat and sand. Check it for swirls and gouges. If your smooth, shoot another coat of primer and prep it for your base coat. Of course if you rally want it smooth you could always have a fine grade sandblasting done on the parts. That would take it all the way down to the metal. If your going that route I would just find some used parts somewhere cheap and have them blasted. Save the good shiney ones for sale or when you want to change it back for a different look later.

In my case, I'm just not a "chrome nut" It's nice and all, but I don't see much point when you can't make out the individual parts because the whole thing is one solid glare.
As for why one would want to paint chrome? Well, I know of quite a few parts that are *only* available in chrome, both from HD and aftermarket. It's not like folks like me actually have a choice.
I was planning on doing the same thing but in a wrinkle coat. Do you have to place the painted item under a heat lamp to get the "wrinkle" when using a wrinkle type paint? Never tried the wrinkle yet but I'm going to tool around painting a chrome air cleaner.
You don't have to heat the piece up, but it will speed the wrinkling process, and sometimes give bigger wrinkles.

It'll be hard to match a factory color with a bomb. Best thing would be to shoot some on something, prepared as you would the "real" piece, and compare.

RE: Painting chrome?
Thanks for the replys. The MOCO doesn't offer everything in the wrinkle black or flat black to match the bob. I am planning on painting the exhaust shield black to match my SE slip ons. Also, I'm looking to black out one of the HD billit airwing air cleaner covers. I have an ECE cover that has leaves the element open but I'm looking for something different.
