First Aid kit for trips
Now that I hav the bagger and plenty of room I bought a decent fist aid kit with the basics.
What could the basic pack be missing that I might need?
My first thought ws insect sting relief (I was stung by a wasp last year) but it has 3 pads...I don't see anything that could be used as a tunicate but then I always have bandanas.
Just trying to be prepared...
My bike kit and hiking/climbing kit are pretty similar:
Latex Gloves
lots of blood absorbing materials for direct pressure (kotex is the bomb for this, yes I buy them myself.)
Vet wrap (kind of like an ace bandage but better)
more kotex
an ace bandage
did I metion kotex before? Throw a couple more in.
In the backcountry I throw in a SAM splint, and a couple extra ACE bandages since we may be days from a trailhead and need to walk out. On the highway, EMT's are usually less than 1 hr away, I'll wait. I'll also take along a small selection of benadryl, advil, immodium, sun screen and dental floss and needle (emergency sewing kit for gear).
Think what you're priorities would be if an accident occurred - make sure the airway is open, make sure the heart is beating, stop major bleeding. Those are life or death, the other things are convenience.
I had to clean cat gut and fur off off on Saturday, after my wife hit one in front of me,and the baby wipes would have come in handy if only I would have had them on the bike.
Two 50ml Bottles of Jack Daniels
Monkey Butt Powder
*** Wipe
Bottle of Aleve
Half Dozen Rubbers
1. Compresses
2. Medical Tape (can be used for much more than holding Compresses in place)
3. Large cotton cloth that can be used for a variety of purposes from sling to compress and beyond
4. Gauze... again , many uses
5. Nitrile or Latex gloves.. again, can have many uses other than BSI
6. A reliable .45 for the a-hole cagers that need an "attitude adjustment"
As for other things like hand sanitizer and aspirin... now it gets down to a "convenience" factor.... those are not emergency type things and should not be considered such. So, it all boils down to how much room you want to take / have to spare...
Bob at your age, if you drank the jack I don't think you would need the rubbers. Which brings me to my contribution, justin case you meet Bob.
