Hate to say this, but those spots have the look of condensation droplets. Maybe a combination of your climate and that waterproof cover (under which it can sweat) is doing you in.

We have 4 Harleys from 1986 to 2005 and there's not a speck of rust or corrosion.

Fwiw, to me your letter looks like venting. I'd never read a letter like that from a customer or employee. I'd sht-can it immediately. According to Word count, it has 813 words in it.

Next time I'd try to get it under 150 and stick to the facts of the problem only.

Just my $.02

Rust or discoloration of any metal is the result of neglect. Pure and simple. Of course, nowadays, it's always "somebody elses" fault, isn't it...

Perhaps some of you have not read this post from the beginning.... As a refresher I've included the following parts:

"I have been riding motorcycles for 30 plus years and last May was finally able to walk into a dealership in Long Branch, New Jersey and buy the bike of my dreams, a 2007 FXDWG. My first new motorcycle."

"New buyers should be made aware upfront that their bikes are NOT protected from the factory and NOT protected from the dealer and that they “are on their own” as far as any normal natural weather that should occur."

"Over my 30 years of riding, I’ve owned Yamahas, Hondas, and even a 1955 Harley Flathead and 1975 Harley Sportster. I have never been so upset with any of them as I have been with my Wide Glide."

I'm not just a newbie wannabe who loves to bitch, I am a Harley rider who loves to ride and feel that the MOCO went over the line and "cheaped out". Are we supposed to just sit back and be like good little boys (or girls)????

I,ve had similar problems as have friends with the wheel rims and spokes.Just to clarify myBob hardley sees rain and when it does its dried off its kept in a dry garage when not in use.
It reminds me of Italian bikes of the 70,s thin pour quality chrome. The sad thing is on a high end product the answer is a cheap one, well cheap for Harley.Fit stainless rims / spokes and stainless fasteners on the rest of the bike. This will in my opinion take their bikes to the next level.
Before i get flamed let me say i absolutelylove my Harley and will NEVER be without one, in 35years of bikes its the most rewarding bike i,ve owned. Which in away makes it all the more infurriating. Personally i,m gonna get the stainless rims/spokes (probabley the big thick 3/8 type spokes).
Rant over

Wow, that's some bad looking rust. I bought last winter a 1983 XLX and it had virtually no rust -- anywhere. I've got a 2000 Super Glide with no rust. Something's not right. I'll have to say that we rented a 2008 EG Classic in Miami earlier this year and it had 2000 miles or so on it. I was surprised to see that the block was corroded and there indeed was surface rust in places. I remember thinking that I would not want to buy this bike....

Well I am sure if you have been riding 30 years and are retired, those rims don't get much attention. Plus you havent owned a newer Harley in years... Many I would bet. Harley Rider mya$$. Poser maybe.Probably one of the many baby boomers who jumped ship after AMF. Buy a Honda its faster, better built, cheaper.Oh I can't afford a big bad Harley Davidson, I have kids a mortgage and an imported ghetto wagon to pay for.You come back to thefold and wanna file a class action over a little rust. You didnt buy aglitter wagon, you bought amotorcycle. Thisis so much aloadof crap. I have been riding Harleys for over 20 years. I have had my share of disappointments, I'll give you that. But, they still put out a hell of a better product than they did in 75. Sell your POS and buy a GD Goldwing. GET OVER IT. Harleys cost money. Motorcycles rust. Your cry baby fixed income sob story is not mine or anyone elses problem its yours. Another whining baby boomer who spent his life runningAmerica into the ground. All for a buck.ME ME ME ME. Thats all that matters aint it? Your Dodge Charger is made in Canada, and your RAM is made in Mexico. Why dont you move there and your fixed income will get a little farther.Get over it while your there...
