Golfblues asked my question.
I was thinking they were at 90* of each other but they were probably straight on & the cars light turned yellow & he tried to beat it & cut in front of the bike. I'm guessing here.

Problem with those left turns is that if you drive defensively and stop on the yellow because some cager turning left may try to jump the light in front of you, then you get run over by the cager behind you who thinks he can make the light too. Sometimes it's a no win situation for the biker.

I guess it's notalways practical but on the run we did yesterdaywhichwas about 40 mileswith numerous intersections, every one wascontrolled by one of NJ finest. No stops.

That sucks & if I knew the guy I think my day would have ended too. Sad.

What I don't get is:

"( car was turning left on a yellow, the bike had green)"

How could the bike have green when the car had yellow on a left turn? Did the bike try to time the red to green a little to quickly? I missing something here.
+1 Good point, I was wondering the same thing myself.

RIP

Some states have a yellow left turn light when oncoming traffic has a green light. Normally there is a little sign that states left turn protected on green. Just something more to confuse you and its not just the old folks, seems everybody has to get to the coffee stand at mach three if they would all just slow down. I treat almost every light as a red as I get to it. Watch 2 or 3 people everyday run red lights but can only get one stopped at a time for their coupon.
Rip life is short enjoy it while your here!

Not only stiffer penalties, but actual driving exam requirements past a certain age... not trying to be a dick, but many older folks should NOT be driving in their condition (diminished response, sight, hearing etc...)... but if they renew their license within the required time... no retesting etc.... I can't tell you how many little old folks scare me into leaving a biscuit in my shorts whiles't riding near them and paying close attention to them.
Don't just get on the old folks, a 19 yr old girl took me out with an unsignalled, no warning left turn into a ranch entrance on a 2 lane country road. Inexperienced, oblivious teenagers are just as capable of killing you as a 70+ driver. My first collision in 45+ yrs riding.
Personally, I think every licensed person should have to take a driver's test every time their license expires. Regardless of age, vehicle or vocation. Imagine how much better people would drive if they had to prove their skills and knowledge of the laws every 4 years. I'd vote for it.

It is always the "Left turner". I prefer to ride highways because atleast noone is going to come accross your path. Not sure whypeople would back out of the ride. I thought we all know motorcycles are dangous and riders do get killed. I guess this was news to the people that backed out.
Um, didn't the people that backed out have to "ride" home? I wouldn't have backed out but I suspect they backed out because they didn't feel up to a ride after what happened, not that they were afraid the same would happen to them.

Anyway, feel sorry for the 51 y.o. and his family.

In this state (MN) it will not go towards civil penalties. It only happened when the great senator from S.D. hit the biker because he was on gov't bussiness (awarded $1,000,000.00 for bikers wife) Many think that stiffer penalties will not help, I dissagree. If everyone knows that if they hit someone( waling, riding a M.C., in a car or roller blading)and does great bodily harm or death that they would face a stiffer fine than $180.00 they incur nowthey would pay closer attention. If you decide to ride or drive you should be responsible for your actions! This also includes being distracted by cell phones, eating , applying make up etc. Right now there is a case of awoman who hit a bus and killed 4 kids by blowing a stop sign, A illlegle person who has a similar accident 6 monthes ago, no license, ins. so far the only traffic ticket she has is failure to stop and failure to yeild.

As I sit here recovering from a crash that was all my fault, I can see why some may have gone home instead of complete the ride. You need to be able to concentrate when riding. Especially group riding. I left the morning of my ride pissed off at my wife. Went too fast into the turn and dumped it. Two ribs and a bruised hip. I knew I would be OK, but I also knew my wife would be pissed. Lesson learned.

Not to be a negative ninny here, but some of the facts are missing and incorrect.

First, he was 61, not 51. http://www.startribune.com/local/wes...r=$sectionName

Second, the intersection (picture below) did have turn lanes and the picture I saw of the car the entire side was caved in all the way to the center console. My question, how fast was the biker going, he was in downtown Rockford?

It doesn't excuse cagers from irresponsible decisions, but I've already witnessed this biking season some very bad behavior by some of my biker friends coming out of a long winter of hibernation.

We all need to be more careful and ride defensively.

my only guessfor an answer to your question would be the opposing movements both had the greens. there may have also been vehicles traveling in the same direction as the biker, but waiting in a left-turn lane for left-turn arrow service. if the movement opposing the biker (direction 79 yo was traveling) gapped-out to service this "lagging" left-turning traffic then it would, in fact, go yellow and then red. the problem with this type of operation is that the guy (79 yo) trying to beat the red on the left turn probably thinking the opposing movement is also going to go red also. this is also the case in "lagging left-turn operation also. most left turns are "leading lefts"
