 \\;\\\\\\;I still dont understand the dealers claiming 51 plus mpg when the real average seems to be 40 mpg. \\;\\\\\\; 40 is still better than my 750 Honda Magna got.

How do you get 50+ mpg on a Harley? Buy a Sportster 883. Do they ever mention a certain bike in those claims?
On my '08 XL1200C I typically get 40-42mpg in town. On the highway, my best mpg cruising in 5th at 67-72 is ~50-52mpg. If I go faster, the mpg drops quickly.
I calculated the last five tanks of gas and each tank \\;varied from 35-40 mpg. \\; When I averaged the five tanks it came out to 37 mpg. \\;
 \\;When I first got my Dyna, I was getting 49 mpg. Of course I was riding 60 miles each way to work so it was all freeway miles. Now I work 4 miles from home and the Harley tax has been paid...around 30 city, 40 highway. Still not too bad even with todays gas prices. In the past couple of months I've reevaluated how much I'm gonna spend in August to get from Olympia to Sturgis and back.

I went for a ride on Monday on my 07 FXDL, all stock. It was about 80% mountain roads 20% highway and I got 49.35 mpg. \\;I work from home so I'm not in traffic often.

It's usually under optimal conditions. \\; Car manufacturers do the same thing...very few cars get as good as what's listed. \\; I get about 40mpg on my EG.

I get around 42 mpg on my Deluxe. \\; My 4 Runner is supposed to get 21 mpg and I get 22 mpg out of it. \\;
