Seriously folks some of the stuff on here is silly....
 \\;
Sorry lanny, but honestly you had be giggling a bit when I first read your post. For those of us that work in the business you basiclly stated the obvious. We know that you just wanted to help and the thread sort of got out of hand.
 \\;
As for the folks making lots of pot shots at the cause and repair...besides the string of useless MCs, \\; \\;I also really have 15 years of handling very large high profile, high availability data center based web and non-web applicaitons. \\; Unless you are there or have significant experience with this particular application anything said really is a pot shot.
 \\;
Complicated applications are not just replace and go...nor are they cut and dry easy to repair. \\; I can make some guesses at the issues and thier causes but I won't...mostly because they really will have no relevance toward getting the site fixed. \\;
 \\;
Since it seems many forums are impacted we are likely not even the first on the list to get repaired. The one that makes the most $$ wins. Really a shame because I think the site is really being negatively affected.
I was serious though, Should I go there and knock on their door at LAX and politely inquire? Has anyone actually talked to the "Source"? Or are we just guessing? Let's bake some special brownies and bring them to them.

GO! Spread the cheer, and tell them were here if they need us

I know you're joking but just in case, I wouldn't. I'll bet they aren't happy campers right now. It could be that they're in the mood for some whoopazz about now. \\;  \\;As in "See that dorky biker? I'll bet he's the hacker. Let's kill him just in case."
Well I have done tons of internet programming and at this point they have no excuse. \\; They have been broken for how long? \\; Biggest isn't always the best and in this case they have proven it. \\; By now they could have just restored from back-up. \\; Every place I have ever been at has had a policy of at worst 24 hour failover. \\; Some places you just update a router and you are back-up.
I could have built a new site from scratch coding and all by this time. \\;
I don't know the details of what happened to the web host or the server hosting this site but what is puzzling to me is why they just don't restore the site from a backup prior to the problems occurring. The web host does back up the server, correct? Granted you would lose some of the most recent threads and posts but so what. I think the members would prefer to lose a few days worth of posts and have a working forum then continue on with the site the way it is. If there are O.S. problems then it wouldn't take long for a tech at the web host to rebuild a server and restore the forum to it. This isn't my problem and I'm not telling anyone what to do - just adding my $0.02

Beercan, that was exactly my first reaction and I still can't say. Something is strange. When an outfit that huge, especially one that is traded publicly on nasdaq gets this big of a hit you'd think it would be news but nope, not even much gossip on google. Mums the word.
 \\;
Add to that how much brainpower they have there and it makes you wonder if it was social hacking as they call it, or an inside job by a disgruntled someone? It makes you wonder if someone destroyed backups and maybe even some proprietery software.
 \\;
I don't know but they do know what they are doing so we can just assume that they have a real mess on their hands. I'm just delighted that it isn't my problem. I also agree that they will fix the bigger sites such as CarsDirect.com first. The software that operates this site is dated so we may see a whole new look to the site when it's finally online. For all we know it's parallel right now.

All I know is that I don't know, lmao.
ckqdrums, I am not offended. Dont worry about it I just wanted to help but like Bluerose said, I guess they know and they are working on it. Sorry, didnt mean anything by this post. Anyhow, Im out of this post.
