If the bar is too low it will be useless, you'll waste your money. Make sure it comes up close to the middle of their back.........plus it will be a lot more comfortable for them, if you decide to ride any distance
This was my experiance just a couple of days ago.

He was tall enough to just stand up and we coudn't have gone 2-3 ft. I thought he was off and hit his head but everything was fine.
My riders e-package was on back order at the time or the sissy bar would have been on.
It will be on from now on with any passenger.
I would not ride 2-up with my wife or kids until I got a sissy bar. I just don't feel secure without it.

The other benefit of a sissy bar is that I mount my T-bag on it riding 2-up or solo. I am not into saddlebags so I have an option for carrying some gear that mounts to the backrest in seconds.
