I've ridden both and the 96 def has a wider power band, it really pulls if you do the 103 stage 2 Big bore kit. \\; I have that combo on my Rocker and it really pulls hard. \\; Plus the 6 speed is very nice. 88s came with 5 speeds - unless somebody added it.

Seriously though, the 96's also has the benefit of the 6 speed tranny.
My 06 Wide Glide with an 88 came with a 6-speed transmission.

hmmm...didn't know that. \\;\\\\\\; I thought the 6 speed was introduced with the 96. \\;\\\\\\; Shows you what I know. \\;\\\\\\;  \\;\\\\\\; My bad.
The 6 speed was introduced on the 06 Dyna's only, as a test run. Everything else came in 07

As for the question, there are too many improvements to the 96, to even consider an 88 (which is a good motor in it's own right, but it had it's share of issues too)
I have both. \\;\\\\\\; The stock 96 seems much stronger than my 88 with stage one. \\;\\\\\\; I just had the stage one done on my Heritage but I'm not picking it up until tomorrow. \\;\\\\\\; \\;\\\\\\; Should be really nice.
