I bought my 2006 Ultra a week after the 07 were on the showroom floor. \\; \\; I was told that my 06 with a stage 1 and exhaust \\; would be as quick as the new 96. \\; \\; I am glad that I got one of the last 88's.

The 96 is stroked too long IMO. Too much rotational mass inside the engine. Boring an engine is better than long stroking it to get displacement. The 80 too small. The 88 is the perfect balance. The 96 is an 88 on steroids. I predict we will see more crank &\\;\\\\\\; con rod failures on the 96 due to the longer stroke.
I have an '06 Ultra, made in spring of '06, so I figure I got one of the last '88's with all the improvements to the '88. \\;\\\\\\; Three weeks after we bought it, however, \\;\\\\\\;the '96/six speed was on the showroom floor.[:@]

[:@] \\;\\\\\\;was my original thought. However, \\;\\\\\\;reading two years of bitching on this forum about high heat/lean burn \\;\\\\\\; '96 engines, lack of accessories, noisy tranny's "fixed" by the IDS, and ineffective six gear below freeway speed, I now am glad we bought the one we did. A Screaming Eagle Stage One air cleaner and download, and flow through modified stock mufflers are the only engine mods we've done. \\;\\\\\\; We routinely get 42-48 mpg riding two up, with plenty of power for the speeds we ride, which are 65 mph or less.
 \\;\\\\\\;
What I don't have yet is a fix for the cam tensioner problem, but that will come with the install of an Andrews 21 \\;\\\\\\;gear driven cam this summer. \\;\\\\\\; We have 22,000 trouble free miles, btw.
 \\;\\\\\\;
Hangfire, the engine size was increased by a longer stroke, which accounts for the increased torque of the '96.
Thanks MNPGRider, I feel good about the '06 that I picked, like I said, I was looking at the '08's but I had second thoughts after finding this forum. I'm sure the '08's are great but I'm happy with my decision.
Well, I had the 88 in my 02 Ultra, and the 96 in my 07 with six speed. The 96 has more power throughout the rpm range than the 88 did, that's for sure. I haven't had the heat issues or noise issues regularly posted here so I guess I got an exceptional one. Just the other day I did a quick run up to 100 mph (showing off a bit) in sixth gear. My 88 would struggle to get there, but the 96 moved right on out and had more to give at 100. By the way, the bike was solid as a rock too. The 02 was a bit nervous at that speed.

As to the endurance of the engine, well, I bought another 3 years of warranty based on my experience with the 88 TC.
Goodbirds were you sayin' you bought 3 more yrs warry for the '02 88"
and needed it? If so why? Just wonderin' I plan to go to 95" and gear cams
next winter.
I predict we will see more crank &\\; con rod failures on the 96 due to the longer stroke.
Maybe with the 96A motors but not the 96B. And boring is not necessarily better than stroking as a way of increasing displacement... it's all about what you are trying to achieve. Stoking is good for low end torque\\; boring is good for high end revs (assuming the rest of the rotating assy is up to the task). I think the best of both worlds is a balanced stroker with a big cam.
Does anyone have 88 and 96 quarter mile times for the same bike? \\;
If you look at horse power and torque figures there isn't that much improvement. \\; \\;I like the 88 because it works well. \\; Neither the 88 or 96 is all that powerful. \\; You can get a v-rod and it will blow either out of the water

Way different kind of motorcycle. \\; That being said, my \\;74ci Sportster will blow either out of the water as well, again different kind of motorcycle. \\; 88's and \\;96's are not exactly racing bikes. \\; They are cruisers. \\; \\; \\;
