This is going to sound pretty rookieish but....I bought a used 2001 Heritage. Im new to Harleys and was wondering what is a stage one kit? and how do I know if I have one? I know my bike is carbourated and that I have Vance and Hines pipes. I bought the bike from the widow of the owner and she knows even less I do...Thanks for any help you could give.
Stage one is a new breather kit (screaming eagle) which includes an air filter and a more opened backing plate, performance pipes of your choice, and carb adjustments to richen it up a little. \\;If you have V&\\;H pipes \\;it's probably already done. \\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\; Easy way to tell is pull off the \\;air filter cover and look at the filter. If the fliter is round and abot 2 inches thick it's been done, if it looks oval and about an inch and a half, maybe not. This is what a stage 1 filter looks like:

\\;krusr is right on the money, typically people will upgrade the carb when the exhaust is is upgraded. If you can feel or see the air filter behind the football shaped air cleaner cover on the right side of the bike you're just about there. There other mods would be in the carb itself. Maybe that widow can find some repair or service receipts and then you can take \\;the bike \\;to the person or shop that serviced the bike and find out from them.
