If you cannot afford to buy the speciality bags then a backpack will work just fine. \\;\\\\\\; The people above that can afford to buy baggers and T-Bags are RUB's. \\;\\\\\\; Someday hopefully you will also be one. \\;\\\\\\;

I'll bet those saddlebags thrown over your Deuce cost more than I paid for my T-Bag on sale...

To and from work with the lunch and extra gear, I use a backpack then strap it down on the on the sport rack. Works great for now will be getting a roll bag \\; of tour bag later. Just not in a hurry right now.
 \\;
If and when I have to take the laptop I have a backpack style, case for it. Used rarely though on the bike.  \\;

I usually just do a backpack. Then again, I go to school, so a backpack is more practical in a lot of ways than 'bags. I use the backpack for schlepping my lunch to work, too.

To address the original post, my hubby has done the backpack thing in the past, to and from work when he didn't want to "clutter up" whatever bike he had with his saddlebags. He now rides an Electra Glide and so doesn't worry about it anymore. \\; I never used a backpack, and don't think I'd like it, but I used a tank bag for a while on my Sportie, for to and from work before I got saddlebags. \\; That worked very well for me. Although I guess some bikes can't accomodate one?
As for the "RUB" comments - I realize the "R" stands for RICH and true, that would be great if I was - however I still do take exception to that term because to me, anyway, it is a negative, derogatory term. Hubby comes from a poor background, and I from not much more up the economic ladder and have both had times in our lives when we didn't have a pot to pee in, and we work our butts off for everything we have, and true, it's a lot more than other folks may have, but I in no way consider us rich. If we were rich, we wouldn't agonize over every purchase like we do, be it big or small.
