For the OP, I'm gonna check out a small leather backpack at Wilson's Leather tomorrow that I was told about. I'm NOT putting bags on my NT!
Marsh the RUB here. I use detachable hardware on my Heritage. Leave the bags off most of the time but they are quick to put on if I am in need of a change of clothes.
Back packs are seen mostly on Sport Bike riders.

I where a backpack when I bring my computer home from work because it doesn't fit in my saddlebags.
Same here - a big screen laptop is a tough fit even on a bagger. Been using a backpack instead of a breifcase for years - easier to carry on the bike, to the office or thru airports. One thing to watch with backpaks is the pull on your shoulders since it affects your steering the bike.
I've been riding since the 70's and always had a luggage rack, backrest, and a trunk. Currently have a Boss Bags leather trunk with side pouches that looks good to me on my SuperGlide. I'm not a big fan of saddlebags either but I suppose they'd be necessary for two-up touring, not as much for commuting/joy riding. I have no interest in managing a backpack while riding, especially while stopping to shop, eat, etc.
The backpack doesn't work if you have a passanger. \\; I use a backpack when I ride my ducati. \\; I don't think I will ever buy a bike again that doesn't have saddlebags. \\; They make things \\; a lot more convenient.
