I wanted a bag just to carry basics like a small tool roll, puncture repair kit and a few other bits 'n' bobs. I also ride in the Winter over here and like the idea of carrying a flask for coffee so bought a single La Rosa Design bag. It is ideal for my usage. There are a myriad of threads on the issue of saddlebags and lots of good recommendations but in the UK we are also somewhat limited what we can lay our hands on. It seems good quality but came at a premium.
Apologies....to me being not as far west as yourself I am an ignoramus when it comes to swing arm bags/saddlebags as to me they all look the same when nailed on a horse.

Saddlemen bags with EZ-Brackets. I just cut the yoke out the middle so it's not a "throw over" saddle anymore. The tour pack is off flebay with a custom bracket that uses the HD-QD hardware like the genuine HD backrest. I posted 2 pics for you to have an idea of what the bike looks like with just a sissy bar and bags if that's the route you wanted to take.
EDIT: All the baggage can be removed in about a minute, literally. The wife and I make a few long trips a year. Once we get to where we're going, I remove the bags and it's back to the sexy Breakout look.
Because 99% of the time, I ride locally and don't use bags. The only bag I keep on it is a swing-arm bag. So, unless you can convince me that 2 rides a year justifies another bike, I'll just stick with the bike I need most of the time and modify it to what I need for the other 1%. I agree Breakouts look terrible with bags. This is why I made everything QD. Even after we ride to our destination for a trip, the bags come off. "Fugly" is only in transit. lol
This is how she sits most of the time.
In fact, the picture in my sig is the same day as the 2nd picture in my fist post. I took the bags and backrest off for a better pic of the bike. She needed a place for her camera so we rode with the bags that day.
I use a small swing arm bag, but I went to dual's so now it's a more of a tool bag style. I'm thinking of adding a sissy bar just to have something to attach a temp bag to if I want to carry a few things. My buddy has a tail bag he keeps on his bike...it doesn't look too bulky an kinda blends in.
