My dealer tells me that there will be NO performance enhancement by changing out the stock brake lines to braided stainless steel and that it will only be a cosmetic improvement. Anyone changed over after riding with the stock lines for a while that can comment on that? It just seems to me that with the amount of force that needs to be applied and the weight of the bike, having a line that won't flex under pressure would help. I do notice that the stock front brake line will expand a bit when pulling the front brake lever.
No braided lines they will not make you stop faster, When you apply pressure on a brake system the pressure rise is equal on all components.
Rubber lines will bulge after the fluid can't go anywhere else, (the pads cannot move anymore). This makes the brake handle feel spongy. The braided lines provide a firmer feel because they will not bulge nearly as much.
But since the bulging only happens after the pad travel reaches maximum it doesn't detract from the braking ability.
They do keep the system from absorbing moisture. And they Look Great.
Make sure you get the ones with a clear or colored overcoat. Without the coating dust and dirt can get under the braid and rub through the teflon tubing.
Braided lines do make a difference in stopping power. After riding my 03 for 3 years, I put braided lines on front & back in Jan. Locked up the bikes rear tire on the ride home cause I pressed it like I had been for the last 3 years. Also noticed even light touches of the front and rear brakes made a big difference.
Bulging lines = lower lower hydraulic pressures = less brake pad pressure on the discs.
Scientific evidence? No. But MY experience is that the lines made a big difference.
All high performance applications use SS braided lines in place of rubber lines whether on a race car , bike or an off roader . Must be a reason why other than looks , especially since you can't even see them on a 4 wheeled vehicle . I've got a set ordered , also clutch and throttle cables from Chicago HD , changing them for LOOKS but any other improvements are a plus , especially when stopping .
