Now this is my kind of thread. Fishtails, footboard fringe, passenger foot board fringe, headlight-driving light-turn signal visors (front and back), whitewalls, two-tone paint, beach bars, 'trucker girl' shift linkage, handle bar tassles. Yup, I guess that just about describes my bike!!!!
If you're serious about achieving the nostalgic look, pick a year model range. Keep the range to a couple years, and do some research on what was available from the factory. That'll give you a starting point. Go to one of the big book stores and check out one or more of the HD history type picture books. You'll be able to see what the MoCO had, as well as what riders were doing. Then remember the pics in these books often show the more outlandish bikes. Tone it down a bit, and you'll have something close to what most riders had.
A couple things I remember my Dad & his friends doing to their bikes in the late 50s - early 60s was white-walls, white buddy seat, white hand grips with red or black plastic fringe, white hard bags, lights around the wheels, maybe even a coon-tail, & those metal bumper- lookin' things. Few of them ornamented their bikes too much, and they made fun of riders who slapped on every piece of junk the MoCo put out. FWIW, I can't remember any leather fringe, except on leather saddle bags, and even then it was at a minimum.
