Are floating rotors worth getting?Being they said to have better breaking power and do not squeek.I was thinking just getting Lyndall brake pads and powdercoating my stock rotors.
The outer ring part which the pads ride on and grip is attached to the center hub in such a way that allows it to "float", or move laterally independently of the hub, eliminating the pulsing feel you get from warped rotors. It gives you much smoother pedal feel. I think the reason they are used on motorcycle brake rotors is because bike rotors are so thin, therefore susceptible to warping.
I would definately try the better brake pads first. The floating rotors MAY offer some benefit in your application, but certainly won't give the "bang-for-the-buck"of better pads.
I ride a 2006 RKC. In 5,000 miles I burned the front brakes pretty bad as I tend to ride at a brisk pace as I am coming from a lifetime of sportbike riding. Did some shopping and ended up with Russell Full Floating rotors with chrome centers and street sintered pads, all from J &\\; P Cycles. After a 2,200 mile weeklong mountain trip I have to say the brakes work very well. Plenty of stopping power, good feel and no noise at all. Highly recommended! My next upgrade will be stainless steel lines from Harley which should help even more
I am tired of the brake noise from the front brakes and I was at the dealers today and was told by the mechanic to swap the rotors from one side to the other to eliminate the noise. \\; First time I have heard of this!
You will not stop any quicker with floaters.Lyndalls will greatly improve your braking ability

I would argue that point. Pads are very much an integral part of the equation but they need a good, constant surface to grab onto. Full floating rotors allow movement so the pads can grip better. Rotor material also plays a role as well as pad material and even type of brake fluid. The lines help also. Braided lines don't swell allowing more power to the pads. There is a reason all sport and racing, as a matter of fact most other bikes, come with full floating rotors.
